Smash Bros Why Doom Slayer Is Only A Mii Costume

Alongside the announcement of the final DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Mii Fighter costume based on the Doom Slayer was also revealed. For fans of the DOOM franchise, this news may be disappointing, as Doom Slayer was not chosen for the final spot on Smash Ultimate’s roster. Still, the choice to add the character as just a costume makes sense given the circumstances leading up to the reveal.

Like Doom Slayer, a number of other popular characters have been added to Smash Bros. Ultimate as Mii costumes rather than as unique fighters. Highly-requested characters like Sans from Undertale, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia were all implemented in this way, their likenesses becoming available as outfits for Mii Fighters. Because Smash Ultimate’s DLC was likely decided far in advance, this may have been the best method available for Doom Slayer’s representation.

Doom Slayer being regulated to a costume could have been due to the community’s support for Sora. Sora has been one of Smash Bros.’ most requested fighters for a number of years, even predating Smash Bros. Ultimate. With Challenger Pack 11 being the last opportunity to add him as a DLC fighter, Sora’s inclusion may have taken priority over other popular picks like Doom Slayer. Additionally, Banjo-Kazooie and Steve, other Microsoft-owned properties, have already been implemented as DLC in Smash Ultimate, whereas Sora marks the first Disney character to ever appear in a Smash Bros. game. This momentous occasion could have swayed the decision to add Sora over Doom Slayer.

Doom Developers Have Discussed With Nintendo Adding Doom Slayer to Smash Bros.

The developers of DOOM have expressed their desire to get Doom Slayer into Smash Bros. in the past. Executive producer Marty Stratton of id Software discussed adding Doom Slayer to Smash Bros. in an interview with Metro following rumors of Doom Slayer coming to Smash Bros. According to Stratton, representatives from his company broached the topic with Nintendo, but Nintendo never initiated the conversation nor had any conversations about the topic that had “gone anywhere serious.” With the reveal of the Doom Slayer Mii costume, it seems that these discussions eventually became fruitful, even if it did not result in Doom Slayer joining Smash Ultimate’s roster. Additionally, implementing Doom Slayer as a Mii Gunner could have been an easier agreement, as it lets the character represent the Doom series without needing to portray its violent or graphic content.

Even if only a Mii costume in Smash Bros. Ultimate, a future Smash Bros. roster could include Doom Slayer in the future. Characters like Inkling and King K. Rool became playable characters after previously being represented by Mii Fighters. Should the Super Smash Bros. series continue, Doom Slayer’s popularity could lead to an official character position in a future game.
