Snapchat’s quirky Cameo Selfies allow users to add their faces to videos and GIFs. What is essentially a deepfake technology has been turned into an entertaining chat feature to express specific moods. Whether it’s a greeting or to show exhaustion, or maybe just to put a smile on the person’s face on the other end, Cameo Selfies provide a quick and easily solution.
Cameos allow Snapchatters to turn themselves into a singing bird, a melting ice cream stick, or even a dancing roast chicken, among other things. In fact, there are over 150 Cameos or short looping video clips to choose from. The resulting looping videos help make messaging interesting, which is one of the most distinguishing features of the app, and helps the company stay ahead in the chat game.
First released in 2019, Cameo Selfies are accessible through either the Android or iOS version of Snapchat. Besides creating your own selfies, Snapchat also provides the option to make Cameos more interactive by adding a friend and creating a two-person version. In addition, not only can they be shared with others on Snapchat, but they can also be saved to a device’s local storage and shared with friends through other social media platforms as well. However, one important aspect of the Cameo Selfies feature is that you can’t simply upload a selfie from your phone’s gallery; it has to be taken within the app.
How To Find & Make Snapchat Cameos
Getting started with Snapchat Cameos involves a few quick steps. Once the app opens, head to a chat and tap on the emoticon icon near the keyboard. Choosing Cameos will launch the camera interface so a selfie can be taken and applied. Finally, select a short looping video and share it with a friend. In addition, users can also choose who can use a Cameo once it has been created. To do this, visit settings and click on ‘Use My Cameos Selfie’ and then choose between Everyone, Friends, or just the owner. For those who want to completely delete their Cameos, there’s a ‘Clear My Cameos Selfie’ option available in the settings.
The Cameos feature is meant to draw users back to Snapchat, which is facing competition from the video-sharing app TikTok and also Instagram Reels. Earlier this year, Snap purchased image and video-editing start-up AI Factory and its technology is reportedly used in the new feature. In spite of the increased competition, things haven’t been that bad for Snap recently with the company’s second quarter earnings confirming daily active users are up 17 percent year over year.
