Snapchat Plans To Let Users Share More Content Outside Of The App

Snapchat is reportedly planning a new feature that will allow users to share content outside of the app. While it’s already possible to share Stories beyond Snapchat, this move will apparently enable people to share other original Snapchat content. Celebrity Snapchats, original shows, and content from its Discover partners, like CNN and Refinery 29, will also be available to share.

Snapchat provides users with the option to create sixty-second videos, where they can apply funny filters — including the option to change their voice — and post them to their own feed, or send them to their friends via the app. Back in 2018, Snapchat first allowed users to share certain Stories off the app, which originally just included official Snapchat Stories from verified users, and those found in the Discover tab. In March of this year, Snapchat rolled out the option to allow users to share their own Stories to other apps. These apps include the dating app Hily, along with Triller, an app for creating music videos. To share a Story to one of the available apps, just look for it on the ‘Share To’ screen, provided the user already has the app downloaded on their phone.

According to Axios, it seems like Snapchat is about to expand that feature even further. Users will evidently be able to share proprietary content including original shows, like Mind Yourself or The Honeybeez of Asu. People will also be able to share ‘Our Stories,’ which are a collection of Stories following similar places, topics or events. Rather than being able to share Stories with certain apps, it looks as though people will now be able to share them as a link via other social media apps, in addition to sending them out via iMessage, or even email. Opening up these links will take the recipient right back to the Snapchat app or the Snapchat’s website. A new feature called “Spotlight” also appears to be in the works — although this is more of a rebranding of the For You page, allowing creators to submit their Stories to the Spotlight feed to be featured alongside Discover content and original shows.

This Is A Smart Snapchat Move

Snapchat has been working lately to put itself ahead of, or at least on the same level with, its competitors. For example, last month it revealed that it’s planning on adding a new feature enabling Snap-makers to add music to their Stories, which sounds suspiciously similar to what TikTok offers. The app also allows people to create a group chat with over 30 people in it. This puts it at least somewhat close to the neighborhood of Facebook Messenger, which lets people have 50 users in one group chat, and very close to Instagram, which allows for 32 chat participants. Snapchat even premiered an in-app feature recently to help users register to vote.

In expanding the ability to share Stories, Snapchat is making its content more accessible. It follows that the more accessible content is, the more people will view it, even if they don’t have Snapchat themselves. The fact that tapping on a shared Story link takes the user right back to Snapchat is smart, too, as it draws people back to the app, including those who might end up making an account of their own. Furthermore, now might be the very best time for Snapchat to roll out this new feature, considering how much more time people are spending on their phones lately, and since TikTok might not make it through the year in the U.S., there might soon be a void that Snapchat could be ready to fill.
