SNK Once Tested Goku & Ryu In King Of Fighters

SNK Corporation’s penchant for company crossovers may have its roots closer to home than fans may expect. The King 0f Fighters remains SNK’s flagship franchise, with its latest installment due out this year. The development of KoF began as a crossover among SNK’s own franchises as characters from Fatal Fury, Ikari Warriors, and Art of Fighting made their way into the game. These characters would go on to become series staples for the KoF franchise. In the late 90s, SNK’s crossover potential began to extend to other companies.

In 1999, Capcom – the developers of the Street Fighter franchise – worked with SNK and signed a collaborative deal to make several crossover titles between the two companies. This deal resulted in two series of titles: SNK vs. Capcom, developed by SNK, and the more well-known and well-received Capcom vs. SNK series, developed by Capcom. Before development even began on SvC or CvS, SNK had already play-tested the idea of a crossover with characters outside of their own franchises behind the scenes.

Through the course of game development, content for video games gets created that may never see the light of day in its final release. This content gets cut out of the final product for various reasons ranging from simply not having the time to finish the content or more complicated reasons, such as the possibility of the game’s age rating increasing. In the case of SNK’s special crossover play test, it was designed internally as a special “limited hobbyist project” with no intent on public release.

How Goku and Ryu Were Implemented In King of Fighters

Speaking with Polygon, the Chief Director of KoF ’98 Toyohisa Tanabe spoke about this project as something that was developed “for fun” among staff two years before the collaboration with Capcom. Tanabe stated that this project was done after the development of KoF ’98 had concluded and went on to say, “We actually had a little bit of time after we finished development. So the team ended up making a build of the game with Ryu and Ken in it.” Capcom and SNK’s 2D fighting games crossing over seems like a perfect fit, but the other guest fighter characters confirmed by Tanabe went beyond the realm of gaming.

Tanabe continued, “It wasn’t only Ryu and Ken that we ended up playing around with. We put in Dragon Ball characters, like Son Goku, as well”. The Dragon Ball franchise is no stranger to the genre of 2D fighting games. Among the many Dragon Ball fighting games came the Super Butouden series on the SNES, which featured a blend of 2D fighting gameplay with Dragon Ball DNA. Goku’s inclusion within The King of Fighters presents an interesting prospect, as it removes Goku from his home series to a more grounded playstyle. Unfortunately, Tanabe states that this test was “never on a physical cartridge” as it was made on development hardware, making it unlikely that this build exists anywhere.

At the time of the play test, Dragon Ball and Street Fighter crossing with The King of Fighters in the same game was an unheard of possibility. Today, SNK Corporation has leaned into crossovers across its numerous titles. The anime/manga series Gintama has crossed over into The King of Fighters All Star mobile game alongside the likes of Tekken and even WWE. While The King of Fighters remains a home for SNK-based crossovers in its mainline titles, SNK Corporation has shown plenty of willingness for cross-company deals, for better or worse.
