SNL Pays Tribute to Betty White by Re-Airing Her Hosting Debut

Saturday Night Live will honor late television icon Betty White by re-airing her 2010 hosting debut on the late-night sketch comedy show.

Saturday Night Live will air a rerun of Betty White’s hosting debut in honor of the late television icon.

As reported by Deadline, NBC will run the episode, which originally aired May 8, 2010 with Jay-Z as the musical guest, as an encore telecast on Jan. 1 at 11:30 p.m. EST. White, who was 88 at the time, was invited to host the special Mother’s Day episode of SNL, making her the oldest person to host the variety comedy show. Her hosting debut pulled in more than 12 million viewers when it aired. She appeared in every sketch, which would later win her the final Emmy Award of her long-standing career for “Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series.”

White was asked to host an episode of Saturday Night Live after millions of people signed a petition calling for NBC to include her as a headliner. The petition, which began on Facebook, was started by David Matthews following White’s appearance in a popular Snickers commercial that aired during the Super Bowl that same year. The episode also saw the return of legacy SNL cast members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch.

White died in her home on Dec. 31, 2021 of natural causes at the age of 99, just weeks before her milestone 100th birthday on Jan 17, 2022. Known as “The First Lady of Television,” White was a beloved actor, comedian and pioneer for women in television, who appeared in countless television shows and films over her the course of her career, which spanned nearly nine decades. After becoming the first woman to produce a sitcom, Life with Elizabeth, in the 1950s, White would star as Sue Ann Nivens in her breakout role on the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973 until 1977.

Most notably, White was known as one-fourth of The Golden Girls, where she starred in a lead role as Rose Nylund from 1985 to 1992, alongside Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty. Overall, White has 115 acting credits across her career, including The Proposal, The Golden Palace, The Carol Burnett Show, That ’70s Show, Hot in Cleveland, The Bold and the Beautiful, Boston Legal, The Lionhearts and many others, as well as countless cameos as herself across movies and television.

White’s episode of Saturday Night Live airs Jan. 1 at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
