The Super Bowl 2020 trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is here. Easily one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the NFL’s annual Super Bowl is almost as famous for its commercials and halftime show as the game itself. This year’s Super Bowl LIV will see the Kansas City Chiefs go up against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, February 2, at 6:30 pm EST on NBC. However, as has become traditional in more recent years, movie studios and companies have already started dropping their “Big Game” trailers and commercials online ahead of time.

So far, this year’s collection of Super Bowl promos includes a Shining-inspired Mountain Drew Zero Sugar ad starring Bryan Cranston, as well as an appropriately meta Pringles commercial featuring Rick and Morty. Not to be left out of the fun, Chris Evans, John Krasinski, and Rachel Dratch have also shown off their “best” Boston accents during a promo for Hyundai’s Smart Park feature. Now, with the big game less than a week away, the Super Bowl movie trailers are starting to pour in.

Just this morning, Paramount unveiled its (pre-)Big Game spot for SpongeBob Squarepants’ latest big screen adventure, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, ahead of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday. You can check it out in the space below.

Sponge on the Run was directed by SpongeBob Squarepants TV show veteran Tim Hill, drawing from a script he wrote with relative newcomer Michael Kvamme and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water duo Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (who’re also known for writing the Kung Fu Panda trilogy). The story follows SpongeBob (once again voiced by Tom Kenny) as he and his dim-witted pal Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke) set out to find SpongeBob’s – seemingly – kidnapped pet snail Gary. As was true with the previous two SpongeBob movies, the film brings the two heroes face to face with an eclectic collection of characters, including real-life celebrities in live-action. The Sponge on the Run theatrical trailer teased a particularly surreal moment where SpongeBob and Patrick cross paths with a sage tumbleweed sporting Keanu Reeves’ face.

Said Super Bowl trailer features an equally bizarre cameo by Snoop Dogg, as part of a gag where SpongeBob has to sum up Sponge on the Run’s plot in 26 seconds for his penny-pinching boss, Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown). The multi-hyphenate has grown accustomed to poking fun at his own image in recent years, making tongue in cheek appearances as himself in Pitch Perfect 2 and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, in addition to his animated turn on The Simpsons in 2017’s “The Great Phatsby”. That trend will presumably continue with Sponge on the Run in what appears to be a full-blown musical number featuring the iconic rapper. It’s bound to be far from the only WTF moment during The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run either, assuming the previous SpongeBob films are anything to go by.
