Snowpiercer Miss Audrey & The Night Car Therapy Explained

In Snowpiercer, a chanteuse named Miss Audrey is the Madam of the Night Car, where she practices isolation therapy. The original plan Mr. Wilford had for the Night Car was to make a brothel, but Miss Audrey asked Melanie Cavill to give the car a higher purpose in helping her provide therapy for passengers through the use of an Isolation Chamber. The Night Car still serves as a night club and a hub for all classes of people, but Miss Audrey elevated its purpose in an effort to help people.

The story of Snowpiercer is set in 2021, nearly a decade after the world is transformed into a frozen wasteland, and a luxury train provides shelter for what’s left of humanity. Mr. Wilford, the eccentric billionaire who built the train, wanted to provide a place for the wealthy to live out their remaining years in opulence and leisure, but those who took the train from him – namely Melanie Cavill – wished for a more noble and inclusive place that might continue the existence of humanity instead. Nevertheless, the train grew to be increasingly separated by class and embroiled in a revolutionary struggle against the rigid social hierarchy and the imbalance of resource distribution. Through a setting symbolic of the struggle of social injustice, one place that remains neutral and open to all is Miss Audrey’s Night Car.

Miss Audrey had a stroke of insight into the necessity of a place for rehabilitation and rest, and therefore transformed part of the Night Car into the Isolation Chamber. The passengers on board were in need of therapy, particularly after many if not all of them lost loved ones and homes when the world froze over. The Isolation Chamber served as a place where one could sit in quiet and seek psychological healing for afflictions like PTSD and grief. Once inside the private room, passengers are led through guided meditations during which they are healed by confronting their experiences and then releasing them. It is evident that the average passenger on Snowpiercer trudges through an abundance of mental fatigue not only from their pasts, but from what they currently face as they traverse the world in a confined and crowded space. Miss Audrey’s mission to help ease these burdens not only through her talents as an entertainer but as a therapist is fairly remarkable.

Sensory deprivation or isolation therapy has been explored as a means of mental and physical health therapy since the 1950s. In 1954, an American physician and neuroscientist, John C. Lilly, designed a sensory deprivation tank to study the origins of consciousness by cutting off all external stimuli. In the ’60s he took a page out of Timothy Leary’s book and added hallucinogenics and anesthetics like LCD and ketamine to the mix, studying the effects of sedation and trances while in the tank. His research into mental health led to the widespread popularity of the tanks a decade later, and studies have shown that brief bouts of isolation can be beneficial to those suffering from anxiety and depression, and can also aid in improving cardiovascular health as well as repairing the nervous system.

Miss Audrey’s particular brand of therapy as found in the fictionalized, dystopian universe of the show is in fact grounded in reality. Brief sessions of isolation and sensory deprivation have proven to repair neurological pathways that link trauma with chronic illnesses, gastrointestinal distress, and certain types of cancer. Her efforts put forth to bring succor and healing to the people of Snowpiercer are noble and effective.
