Snowpiercer Theory The World Is Warming Because Of The Train

Snowpiercer season 2 shockingly revealed that the outside world is starting to get warmer – but is the Great Ark Train really the reason the Earth is coming back to life? The drama of TNT’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi series has centered on the pending conflict between Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) and Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) for control of Snowpiercer. However, Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) made a discovery that could change everything.

For seven years, the last 3,000 survivors of the human race have been sheltered by Snowpiercer after the Earth was frozen by a man-made meteorological catastrophe. Snowpiercer and its Engine Eternal were designed by Melanie Cavill’s genius but Mr. Wilford, the billionaire Messiah figure of Wilford Industries, took credit for the 1,001-car-long super train. Snowpiercer’s society was built upon Wilford’s rigid and cruel class structure of the wealthy in First Class and a service industry earning passage on the train living in Second and Third Class. However, 400 people (including Andre Layton) violently stowed away aboard Snowpiercer upon its departure and were forced to live in squalor in the Tail section. Meanwhile, Melanie stole Snowpiercer from Mr. Wilford and left him to die in Chicago, but Cavill decided to let the train believe Wilford was sequestered in the Eternal Engine so that Melanie could maintain his class structure and run the train in Wilford’s name.

Melanie’s control of Snowpiercer lasted for 18 revolutions of the train circumnavigating the globe before Andre Layton led the Tail and Third Class in overthrowing the Wilford power structure. Melanie and Layton, originally enemies, ended up working together to save Snowpiercer from a coup by First Class, eliminating 7 cars from Snowpiercer with the insurrectionists aboard. Melanie then formally ceded command of Snowpiercer’s remaining 994 cars to Andre – just as Mr. Wilford emerged from the cold aboard a 40-car supply train named Big Alice that permanently docked with Snowpiercer, which is now 1,034-cars-long.

But despite the violence and deaths aboard Snowpiercer, with more threatening to come as the power struggle between Wilford and Layton commences, there are signs of life and hope outside of the train. While Snowpiercer and Big Alice were stopped in Chicago, Melanie took a snow sample and found evidence that the world is starting to get warmer. The preliminary assessments by Snowpiercer’s engineering team seem to back up Cavill’s discovery, which completely changes the future of humanity and of Snowpiercer the series. Is the Great Ark Train actually responsible, at least in part, for the Earth coming back to life? If so, Melanie Cavill’s invention may have actually led to humanity’s salvation in ways she never anticipated.

Why Snowpiercer’s World Froze And How It’s Warming Up

Snowpiercer Theory The World Is Warming Because Of The Train

Snowpiercer frozen world is a climate change parable and warning, and its calamity began when the weather changed. In order to combat global warming, scientists launched a compound called CW7 into the atmosphere. The intention of CW7 was to reflect the sun’s heat and reverse global warming, but instead, the CW7 sent the planet into an ice age. A massive drop in temperature occurred and the Freeze covered the entire planet, killing all flora and fauna – except for the 3,000 survivors aboard Snowpiercer and the roughly 100 that sheltered in Big Alice. The temperature outside Snowpiercer is -12o degrees Celsius and projections indicated it would be 1,000 years before the Earth naturally became warm enough again to support life.

However, Melanie’s discovery potentially demolishes all known climate models. The snow sample she took had traces of ammonium sulfate, which the CW7 compound was stored in when it was launched into the atmosphere. The CW7 has denatured in the atmosphere and it is now breaking apart and coming down. The change in the atmosphere is causing it to snow, at least in Chicago and likely in other parts of the Earth, which was impossible before. With this new climate model, Snowpiercer’s engineering team saw projections of the Earth warming to the -80s, which is still far too cold but it’s a sign the Earth is indeed warming. Sections of the planet could be hospitable for recolonization within the lifetimes of the people aboard Snowpiercer. Cavill’s conclusions were even verified as possible by Mr. Wilford’s own husband-and-wife team of scientists, the Headwoods.

How Snowpiercer’s Eternal Engine Could Have Sparked Global Warming

However, something Melanie Cavill, Bennett Knox (Iddo Goldberg), and Javier de la Torre (Roberto Urbina) haven’t considered yet is what effect Snowpiercer itself is having on the Earth’s warming. The Snowpiercer train is powered by the Engine Eternal, which is a perpetual motion machine of Melanie’s design. Snowpiercer’s engine propels the train without any fuel; in fact, it’s the train’s motion that powers Snowpiercer’s batteries and provides electricity to the hundreds of cars and its inhabitants.

At the start of Snowpiercer season 2, the super train is embarking on its 19th revolution in 7 years, and it passes through most continents of the planet while traveling at an average speed of 100 KPH. Snowpiercer, which is a massive 10 miles long from front to rear, is the only thing on Earth that is constantly generating energy. While the specific mechanics and science behind Snowpiercer’s Engine Eternal aren’t known (the series is science fiction, after all), logically, the Great Ark Train itself is impacting the planet it circumnavigates.

While Snowpiercer likely isn’t sending carbon emissions into the atmosphere, its continual progress across the globe very likely is also affecting the icy planet and it could be a contributing factor to the Earth’s sped-up recovery. Further, Big Alice was also undergoing its own revolutions for seven years while Mr. Wilford was plotting a new takeover after docking his train with Snowpiercer, so the two trains, both apart and now locked together, may have also had an unforeseen impact on the Earth coming back to life.

Is Snowpiercer’s Future Outside The Train?

Even though season 2 has just begun, TNT has already renewed Snowpiercer for season 3, which is heartening news for fans. It means that TNT not only has confidence in Snowpiercer but the creative team is free to plan ahead and they have the mandate to tell their maxi-story for series and its diverse group of characters. Snowpiercer season 2’s main plotline revolves around how Mr. Wilford will wrest the train’s 1,034 cars from Layton, but episode 2, “Smolder to Life”, set up a compelling B-story about Melanie leaving the train to bring the Breslauer Research Station in the Rocky Mountains online, although this will only further separate Melanie from her estranged daughter, Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard). But “Smolder to Life” also tacitly promised that for Snowpiercer, “the future is outside.” And if the outside world can be saved, will Mr. Wilford take credit for humanity’s survival?

Mr. Wilford hopes that going to the research station alone is a suicide mission for Cavill, whom he loathes for betraying him and stealing his train seven years prior. However, it’s doubtful Snowpiercer intends to write off Jennifer Connelly’s Melanie, who is the series’ lead protagonist and, arguably, its best character. Instead, Melanie’s expedition could set the stage for more drama to occur outside of the confines of Snowpiercer and Big Alice. What Cavill will discover in the Breslauer Research Station remains to be seen, and Snowpiercer will reveal much more about the state of the frozen Earth as Melanie’s work coincides with the data that the weather balloons Snowpiercer launched will find. Cavill may find that Snowpiercer itself is a contributing factor to the Earth coming back to life. If that’s the case, it means Melanie’s invention did save the human race and that she’s the true hero of the story after all.
