Sonic And Silver Became Enemies Because of An Embarrassing Mistake

Most fans who are familiar with the video games know how Mephiles the Dark tricked Silver the Hedgehog into traveling back in time to kill Sonic the Hedgehog to prevent his dystopian world from coming to pass. In the comics though, their rivalry was much different.

In Archie Comics’ rendition, writers still had Silver time travel to save his future world but replaced Mephiles and his treachery with a whole host of colossal mistakes perpetrated by none other than Silver himself. He messes up so many times that the hedgehog even gets trapped in Sonic’s world until he solves what he originally set out to accomplish. During his initial investigation, Silver learns that his future began falling into disarray when a member of the Freedom Fighters betrayed his comrades and destroyed their entire group. That’s all the information he’d unearthed when he decided to stop searching. Silver did know, however, that Sonic was the only one physically capable of destroying the Freedom Fighters and therefore believed only Sonic could have been the traitor.

Silver arrives once again in issue #235, believing this time that Antoine the Coyote betrayed the Freedom Fighters. He was so sure of Antoine’s guilt that he still decided to make the journey even when he learned that, if he was wrong, he wouldn’t be able to come back home until he found the true traitor. Of course, Silver is once more mistaken, but it almost proves fatal as Sonic loses his cool and attacks him. Right before Silver’s return, Antoine had been literally blasted into a coma, and Sonic was so shaken up by his friend’s current predicament that when he heard Silver’s latest false accusation, Sonic attacked Silver with such ferocity that readers originally believed that Sonic might kill him. He only stopped when he heard that Silver is trapped, upon which time Sonic tells him to just leave.

Archie Comics worsened Silver the Hedgehog’s situation from the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog video game. Silver may have been foolish to believe Mephiles, but he really had nothing else to go on. The comics’ rendition of Silver, however, has enough ancient books at his disposal to most likely find the culprit but instead chooses to stop researching to act on incomplete data. It may have been rash to act so impulsively the first time, especially when he clearly drew his own conclusions from so little information, but it’s understandable why. His next attempts are much less forgivable. Regardless, Silver is usually portrayed as a victim of his own failures, whether they are by his own design or due to his overly trusting nature. So far, only IDW Publishing has chosen to redeem him during the Metal Virus Saga. It’s nevertheless ironic as people from the future should know everything about the past when Silver the Hedgehog has clearly proven this to not be the case.
