As the much-maligned Sonic the Hedgehog’s release date inches closer, the film is projected to have a solid President’s Day opening weekend.

According to Variety, the video game-based movie is estimated to open with $40 million when it is released on Valentine’s Day. The film’s main competition will be Fantasy Island, a horror spin on the television classic. Fantasy Island is estimated to bring in between $13 million and $15 million over the weekend.

Sonic was a case of much-needed pushbacks as the fans reacted negatively to the beloved video game character’s initial design in the film’s first trailer. The upsetting fan reactions caused the film’s studio, Paramount, to reschedule the film twice before settling on Valentine’s Day.

Sonic was reanimated by Moving Picture Company to look closer to his video game counterpart. Despite the company’s efforts and the positive response from fans, the animation studio closed its doors due to “external market pressures.”

Helmed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic the Hedgehog and Jim Carrey as Sonic’s nemesis Doctor Robotnik. The film costars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough and Adam Pally. The film is set for release on Feb. 14.
