Sonic PS5 Game Made In Dreams Looks Better Than Most 3D Sega Attempts

Some fans took it upon themselves to develop a 3D Sonic game in Media Molecules’s Dreams, and the results may have Sega developers taking notes.

A fan-made Sonic the Hedgehog game in Media Molecules’ Dreams on PS5 looks better than most of Sega’s attempts at making 3D Sonic titles. Sonic has had a more tumultuous history than other franchises that emerged from the same era of gaming. In contrast to rival mascot Mario, who has had a string of critically acclaimed games over the past several decades, Sega has struggled to find the same success with the Blue Blur.

While there are some titles, like Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors, which serve as some of the franchise’s better games in recent memory, others just drag down the franchise name. Sonic Forces and Boom are considered some of the worst games ever made for the franchise due to frequent bugs, glitches and bad level design. Fans of the blue hedgehog still remember Sonic’s infamous release on PS3 and Xbox 360, colloquially known as Sonic 06.

The video, posted on YouTube by user OpyGam3r, shows a playable 3D game made in Dreams on PS5 featuring Sonic. Users RichMenace_94 and fivetimesone on Dreams are the creators of the project, which is titled “Sonic Adventure: Dreams Edition.” In the video, a well-sculpted model of modern era Sonic runs around in a hub world and a set of levels. Classic and newer Sonic mechanics are featured, such as the classic Spin-Dash synonymous with the Blue Blur and the boost mechanic seen in modern Sonic games like Sonic Unleashed. The fan game seems to take much inspiration from Unleashed, which had similar levels during the game’s daytime sections. This inspiration is evident in the perspective shift from 3D to 2.5D during one of the sections in the level, which is one of the hallmarks of Unleashed’s speed levels.

Despite the Sonic franchise’s relative lack of recent successes, fans of the Sega original have stuck by the hedgehog. Many other mascots that have popped up over the years have disappeared or faded into infamy, as is the case with Bubsy. Instead, Sonic is succeeding in areas Mario never has, like his appearance on the silver screen in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog, which became the highest-grossing video game movie of all time. A sequel featuring Tails is currently in production and expected in theaters by 2022. A new Sonic game is also in development, but no release date or title is known.

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. While his history isn’t the greatest in gaming, none can say that the Blue Blur is not without love. If the fan game in Dreams means nothing else, it shows that people are still willing to play a 3D Sonic game. Better yet, people still want a new Sonic the Hedgehog game in general, something Sega is probably more than happy to hear.
