Sons of Anarchy was no stranger to major character deaths over the course of its seven seasons and 92 episodes. The series ran from 2008-2014 and followed the life and crimes of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club based in the small town of Charming, California.

Sons of Anarchy starred Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff, Katey Sagal and Ron Perlman among, other recognizable faces. The show’s central love story was between Hunnam’s Jax and Siff’s Tara, but their arc unfortunately doesn’t have a happy ending.

Who Was Tara Knowles?

Tara Knowles appeared in the pilot of Sons of Anarchy when she returned to the town of Charming after an 11-year absence, during which time she became a respected medical doctor. Tara’s past was not as clean and simple as originally believed. She was Jax’s high school girlfriend and the pair got into some trouble with the law during their relationship. Tara decided to leave Charming at 19 and pursue a career in medicine while she moved in with family in San Diego.

Tara then spent time in Chicago to complete her medical internship where she became trapped in a toxic and destructive relationship with an ATF agent named Josh Kohn. Fearing for her safety, she fled Chicago and returned to Charming where she thought SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) would help keep her safe. She and Jax rekindled their relationship and had a son together named Thomas. Tara also raised Jax’s son Abel as her own. The couple got married in Season 5, Episode 2, “Authority Vested,” at a brothel, prior to Jax being arrested and taken to prison with other members of SAMCRO.

How & Why Did Tara Die?

Tara met her end during Season 6, Episode 13, “A Mother’s Work” when she was killed by Jax’s mother, Gemma. Gemma and Tara never liked each other, and while occasionally working as allies united by their lifestyles as “old ladies” and their love for Jax, there was never much love or trust between them. This confrontation came to a peak when Gemma learned that Tara attempted to make a deal to betray SAMCRO in order to save her sons from the lifestyle of the club.

Tara wanted to take her sons away from Charming and keep them from the life Jax had succumbed to; the inheritance of a life committed to the motorcycle club, full of violence and death. She at one point believed that the love she had for Jax and the love he had for her in return would be stronger than the destructive nature of the club, but she realized the folly of that idea and decided to look for a way out. Jax attempted to step in and take responsibility for the deal with law enforcement, which would land him in jail for potentially the next 25 years, but allow Tara the freedom to leave Charming with their sons forever.

Gemma learned of Jax’s plan and stepped in to prevent this from happening. She always had a possessive connection to her son, and would absolutely step in to meddle in his life should she see fit to do so. Gemma went to Tara’s home and stabbed her repeatedly in the head with a carving knife. Juice showed up and helped her cover up the crime and dispose of the evidence. Jax eventually returned home to discover his wife’s lifeless body.

Tara’s death was a deliberate storytelling choice made by showrunner Kurt Sutter. Part of Jax’s journey through the series required him to lose Tara, described as his “True North,” the person who would always be there to keep Jax from going beyond the point of no return. In order for him to really reach the mental and emotional shift required to complete the planned run of the series, Tara had to go.
