Sony Wants PS4 Feedback Ahead of PS5 Release in 2020

At around this time in 2020, the PlayStation 5 will be released, and a new console generation will begin, which means that the era of the PlayStation 4 is just months away from wrapping up. It’s been an interesting six years, and Sony apparently wants to hear from fans about their thoughts on the current generation before it ends.

Word on the street is that Sony is sending out emails giving select PS4 owners the chance to fill out a survey. Said survey is apparently being conducted by InMoment, an independent research company acting on Sony’s behalf, and invites people to “tell us about your time with PS4.” It goes on: “We want to hear from you so we can keep making things great For The Players. We hope you’ve enjoyed exploring new worlds, competing against the best players online, teaming up with your friends and making new ones.”

From what’s been revealed so far, it’s not fully clear what the criterion is for potential survey-takers. According to Reddit user kasual7, who shared an image of their email, it may have something to do with the fact that they’re part of Sony’s firmware beta testing program. They also noted that the PlayStation 4 survey may be focusing on European users, so anyone wondering why they haven’t gotten an email from InMoment might have these factors to blame.

kasual7 also doesn’t divulge any of the survey’s questions, but they do make it clear that Sony’s overall intention is to gather as much data as possible regarding the PS4 in order to help improve the PS5. Whatever it’s looking for specifically, there’s plenty to learn from the PS4 after six years, both good and bad. While it has led this console generation, it’s hardly perfect. Besides the occasional technical hiccup and system crash, console-owners have also had to deal with an unintuitive UI and update process, to name a few issues (though Sony has already confirmed that the PS5 will address the PS4’s UI problems).

For all the mistakes the PS4 has made since 2013, however, it can’t be argued that the console doesn’t set an excellent standard for Sony to build off of. There’s a reason the PlayStation 4 is the second best-selling console of all time. The core decisions Sony made with its sleek black box have enabled it to dominate this generation, making it the platform of choice for millions of gamers and home to some of the greatest games to date.

Given that, it’s no surprise that Sony’s looking to the PS4 to help guide it towards continuing that success with the PS5. And as kasual7 points out, it’s neat that it’s looking to the PlayStation community to help it with that. “It’s nice to see that Sony is gathering feedback on this gen in order to improve the next gen,” they wrote, “and this email kinda marked the end of an era in a way.”
