Space Jam 2 Is Already Very Different To The First Movie

The first images from Space Jam: A New Legacy are out, and they further prove how different it is to the original Space Jam, not just visually but also narratively. Back in 1996, Warner Bros. surprised the audience with the live-action/animated comedy Space Jam, which mixed two very different worlds: professional basketball and the Looney Tunes. Although a strange combination with an equally strange premise, Space Jam was a box office success and became the highest-grossing basketball movie of all time, but critics weren’t fully on board with it and it received mixed reviews – however, that didn’t stop it from amassing a cult following.

Space Jam tells a fictionalized account of what happened between Michael Jordan’s initial retirement from the NBA in 1993 and his comeback in 1995, in which he was enlisted by the Looney Tunes to help them win a basketball game against the Monstars, a group of aliens that threatened to enslave the beloved Looney Tunes to use them as attractions for their theme park. Although Space Jam gave a proper end to its characters, talks about a sequel began in 1997, but those ideas for a sequel ended up becoming the 2003 movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action, which was a critical and commercial failure. Now, 25 years after the release of Space Jam, comes a sequel titled Space Jam: A New Legacy, this time starring the Los Angeles Lakers’ star LeBron James.

Space Jam 2 follows the basic idea of its predecessor with an NBA star joining the Looney Tunes’ team, but it’s already very different from it on different levels. Space Jam 2 gave Bugs Bunny and company a 3D look, which makes them a bit more realistic, contrary to what the first movie did, which stayed true to their cartoon essence and wasn’t too concerned about seamlessly blending the real world with the cartoon one. The biggest difference, however, is in terms of narrative, as even though it’s also a comedy, it has a more serious tone as well.

Space Jam was all about Michael Jordan’s career as well as that of the Looney Tunes, as the Monstars were threatening to end with it by enslaving them, but Space Jam 2 will take a different route. Instead, the movie will see LeBron James and his son Dom (played by Cedric Joe) trapped in a virtual space by a rogue algorithm named AI-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle). LeBron will then have to lead Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny, and the rest to victory over the AI-G’s digitized champions on the court in order to return home safely. LeBron had previously shared that it will be a more emotional story than what viewers would expect from a Space Jam sequel, as it focuses on his relationship with his son, and it was described by him as “a parenting movie between me and my son, and me trying to demand my son to do something because I was taught that way growing up”, as his son’s main interest is becoming a video game developer.

In addition to that, Space Jam 2 will not have the Monstars as the opposing team, instead introducing the Goon Squad, which will also take inspiration from real-life basketball players. The Monstars famously stole the talent of stars Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues, while the Goon Squad, true to the AI/digital vibe of the movie, will see “digital gamified super-versions” of both NBA and WNBA players, such as Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Diana Taurasi, Nneka Ogwumike, and Chiney Ogwumike. All these changes fit with the “new legacy” part of Space Jam 2, so rather than being a direct sequel, it’s more a new take on the concept that made Space Jam so popular.
