Space Jam: A New Legacy co-star, Greice Santo, is reportedly offering a $100,000 reward for a copy of deleted footage from the film featuring the amorous cartoon skunk, Pepe Le Pew. The first Space Jam, which premiered in 1996, was a hybrid live-action/animated comedy following basketball star, Michael Jordan, as he teams up with the iconic characters of the Looney Tunes to defeat a villainous group of aliens in a dueling basketball match. The film was a blockbuster hit, grossing $230 million worldwide. Its widespread mainstream success eventually made it a cult classic, spawning its upcoming sequel with LeBron James.

Among the initial core cast of the Looney Tunes, was striped skunk, Pepe Le Pew, who first debuted onscreen in 1945. The character became infamous for his overwhelming body odor and pushy demeanor around women, often chasing and cajoling them despite their protests. While Pepe Le Pew originally had a scene in Space Jam: A New Legacy, the scene was cut after Malcolm D. Lee replaced Terence Nance as director of the project. Soon after, Warner Bros. Pictures revealed that Pepe Le Pew would no longer appear in any of its future creative ventures, including the updated Looney Tunes series currently playing on HBO Max.

According to Uproxx, actress Greice Santo is willing to pay $100,000 for the removed footage, which showcases an interaction between Pepe Le Pew and Santo. The scene, which allegedly spoofs the 1942 classic, Casablanca, introduces the aggressive skunk as a bartender who persistently pursues a woman in the bar, eventually kissing her arm until she slaps him. Pepe Le Pew then confesses that Penelope Pussycat has filed a restraining order against him, prompting LeBron James to chastise him for touching others without their consent. Santo shared her disappointment with the decision to delete this moment:

[It is] so important to have this scene in a movie to inspire the younger generations, and also the older generations, so we can correct that behavior. I felt that this scene was a way to show kids that this kind of behavior is wrong.

However, the studio responded to news of the $100,000 reward with a warning, explaining, “It is a crime for someone to solicit another to steal and distribute Warner Bros.’ property.” A representative for Santo quickly clarified that the actress is solely interested in paying Warner Bros. for the footage. Although the moment between her and Pepe Le Pew was never animated, she remains invested in procuring the cut.

While it is understandable that Santo would exhibit disappointment upon the removal of her scene in Space Jam: A New Legacy, the erasure of Pepe Le Pew is far from an inflammatory oversight. Perhaps a skunk who sexually harasses women should not be the character to “teach” the audience about consent and respect. In fact, maybe the best way to show kids how to model basic human decency is to highlight interactions of positive behavior, rather than negative actions that are “punished” with a few cursory words. After all, there is something to be said for refusing to give a character with poor behavior any more attention than he deserves.
