Spencer Director Pablo Larraín’s Next Biopic Wont Be Britney Spears

Spencer director Pablo Larraín says his next biopic won’t be about Britney Spears. The Chilean filmmaker made his English-language debut in 2016 with Jackie, a critically-acclaimed biopic about former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The film follows Jackie Kennedy during two consequential periods in her life, her early days in the White House and immediately following the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy. Jackie saw Natalie Portman receive an Oscar nomination for her performance in the lead role.

Now, Larraín will follow Jackie with another intruding biopic which releases on November 5 and stars Kristen Stewart as the beloved British icon Princess Diana. Titled Spencer in reference to her maiden name, the film follows Diana over the course of one weekend at Sandringham Estate in 1991 as contemplates divorcing her husband, Prince Charles (Jack Farthing), and leaving the royal family. Spencer has already premiered at various festivals and has been continually racking up good press and garnering Oscar buzz due to Stewart’s magnetic performance. The film also stars Timothy Spall, Sean Harris, and Sally Hawkins.

In the lead-up to Spencer’s release, director Pablo Larraín sat down with Variety for an episode of their Awards Circuit Podcast to discuss his new film as well as his future prospects. With Jackie and Spencer under his belt, Larraín revealed plans for his next biopic to be his last, concluding his trilogy in a sense. Though he’s not sure who his next film will focus on, Larraín would like it be “a lady with heels.” He also seemed to rule out the possibility of a Britney Spears biopic, as rumors have suggested. I am very curious. In particular, her relationship with media. I’ve worked with certain people’s lives, and it’s never really a biopic. I think the biopic concept is a bit of a fantasy. What would be odd is making a movie about someone like Britney Spears, and who will play her? Would she play herself? Would someone else be playing her, and then she would be on set looking at herself played by another person? That operation, I think, is really weird. If it was a fictional take on her, that could be very interesting.

Larraín has carved out an interesting niche for himself with biopics tackling two of the most iconic and powerful women in history, Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana. Though he says he doesn’t want to spend his entire career making these type of films, he did express interest in making a third to cap off his unceremonial trilogy. While internet chatter has suggested that Britney Spears would be a perfect subject for his next film, Larraín doesn’t quite seem convinced that would work.

Famous musicians have portrayed themselves in films about their own lives before, with one prominent example being Eminem aka Marshall Mathers in 2002’s 8 Mile, although it’s unclear if Spears would be interested in doing the same. While Larraín’s Britney Spears biopic may never come to fruition, two documentary films have been made about her conservatorship, Framing Britney Spears and Netflix’s Britney vs. Spears. Spencer opens everywhere on November 5.
