Spider-Man: 10 Low-Key Villains Across The Movies

Though Spider-Man has faced off with iconic villains like Doc Ock and Mysterio in the movies, some of his enemies were not as obviously evil.

Spider-Man has some of the best comic book villains of all time and many of them have appeared in the movies. Spidey has faced off with the likes of Doc Ock and Mysterio in the movies while villains like Venom and Morbius have even gotten their own solo movies. And it seems like a big roster of villains will be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

But while the big-name bad guys take all the attention, the Spider-Man movies have also featured some antagonists that fly a little under the radar. While they might not be as evil or as important to the story, these low-key villains from the Spider-Man movies should not be overlooked.

10 Tony Stark (Spider-Man: Homecoming & Spider-Man: Far From Home)

The team-up between Tony Stark and Peter Parker was one of the most charming in the MCU so it was great to see Tony as part of Peter’s first solo adventure. However, while Tony acted as a mentor to Peter, he also caused a lot of problems.

Tony was responsible for creating two major villains Spider-Man had to face off with. He took Adrian Toomes’ business away and misused Quentin Beck’s ground-breaking B.A.R.F. technology. These led these men to become Vulture and Mysterio, respectively, and Peter had to clean up Tony’s mess.

9 Norman Osborne (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

It’s funny to think of Norman Osborn as a low-key villain in the world of Spider-Man. Osborn is a key Marvel villain in the comics and he was the first live-action villain Spider-Man fought in the movies. But with only a tiny role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Osborn’s villainy could go unnoticed.

Though Norman only has one scene in the movie before he dies, he still manages to be a terrible guy from his death bed. Norman seems to mock his son with the fact that he’ll die of the same rare disease and it is also revealed Norman had Peter’s parents killed. That’s a lot of evil for someone with such little screentime.

8 Brad Davis (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

The romance between Peter and MJ in the MCU is one of the highlights of those movies. However, as with any high school romance, there are complications. One such obstacle that arises is in the form of Brad Davis in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Though he initially seems like a nice enough guy who happens to also like MJ, he proves to be more nefarious than he seems. After walking in on Peter in a compromising position, Brad snaps a photo so he can show MJ and hopefully get rid of his romantic competition.

7 Wrestling Promoter (Spider-Man)

Peter’s brief career as a wrestler is something taken directly from his origin story in the comics and recreated in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. But while the event is integral in the story of Spider-Man, one key character is often overlooked.

After winning his match, Peter goes to the fight promoter who refuses to honor his deal with Peter. When a thief then robs the promoter, Peter lets him go to get a little revenge only for it to lead to Uncle Ben’s death. However, had the promoter been a man of his word, the tragedy would have been avoided.

6 Mr. Jacks (Spider-Man 2)

There are a lot of interesting supporting characters in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, but fans might be surprised to learn Joel McHale had a small role. Years before joining Community, McHale played a bank worker named Mr. Jacks.

It is very easy to dislike Mr. Jacks as he refuses to help Aunt May keep her home and even denies her a free toaster. However, Mr. Jacks shows he’s a villain at heart when he tries to steal a piece of gold during Doc Ock’s robbery only for May to thwart his plans.

5 Alistair Smythe (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

Another famous sitcom face who surprisingly shows up in a Spider-Man movie is B.J. Novak who has a small supporting role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, playing Alistair Smythe. Though Smythe is a notable villain in the comics, he is just an OsCorp employee in the movie.

However, while he might not be as formidable as his comic book counterpart, Smythe is still shown to be a sleazy jerk. He uses his disrespected employee, Max Dillon, and his careless attitude towards him leads him to become the villainous Electro.

4 Bernard (Spider-Man 3)

One of the most personal storylines in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies involved Harry’s betrayal of Peter. It was a strong emotional arc yet it also could have been a much simpler issue if not for one man.

Bernard is a butler working for the Osborn family who appears briefly in all three Raimi movies. However, it is not until Spider-Man 3 that he decides to tell Harry that Norman died by his own recklessness and that it wasn’t Spider-Man’s fault. It’s baffling why he would keep that important information to himself for so long.

3 Dr. Ashley Kafka (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is often criticized for being an overstuffed movie and Dr. Ashley Kafka is a good example of that. The character is randomly introduced well into the movie and it is a cartoonish depiction of an evil scientist character that makes the viewers wonder what this is doing in the movie.

Just as quickly as Kafka is introduced, he is taken out of the story, adding nothing but confusion with his presence. However, as brief and unnecessary as he was as a character, he is also shown to be one of the most sadistic villains in any Spider-Man movie.

2 Carjacker (Spider-Man 3)

The first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie leads audiences to believe that the man who robbed the wrestling promoter was the same man who killed Uncle Ben, thus filling Peter Parker with guilt and starting his heroic path.

Spider-Man 3 delivers the pointless retcon that the Flint Marko killed Uncle Ben and the carjacker was simply Marko’s partner in crime. While that diminishes his stature as an important villain, the carjacker also showed no concern for Uncle Ben being killed and ditched his partner at a crime scene.

1 J. Jonah Jameson (Spider-Man 1-3)

J.K. Simmons’ performance as J. Jonah Jameson was so beloved in the Spider-Man movies that he became the first actor to bring their character from one Spider-Man universe to another. It is a funny and colorful performance that made Jameson so enjoyable.

However, the comedic performance also distracts from the fact that Jameson is a terrible person. He knowingly lies in his major publication as a way of selling more newspapers, even if it means painting a hero as a menace. On top of all that, he tries to exploit his young photographer whenever possible.
