A new body paint cosplay brings back Silk’s first costume, reminding fans of the comic issue where Spider-Man first discovered that the radioactive spider which created him also created another superhuman – the web-spinning Cindy Moon.

Receiving her full debut in 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man #4 after minor, unnamed appearances in previous issues, Cindy was bitten by the same spider that created Peter, developing similar but not identical powers. Weaker but far faster than Spider-Man – and boasting both an advanced spider-sense and the ability to spin webs naturally out of her fingertips – Cindy was locked up for years by Peter’s one-time mentor Ezekiel, who wished to protect both her and Peter from the multiversal predators known as the Inheritors. Spider-Man later found and freed Cindy, who burst onto the New York scene with a ready-made superhero name and costume, the latter of which would quickly change as she struck out on her own.

Now, body paint artist Melissa Croft has recreated Cindy Moon’s original web-based costume in a video depicting her web-slinging powers, as well as a creative photoshoot that seemingly sees her hanging upside down like a true Spider-Verse hero, both shared on Twitter. Croft has tackled many Marvel and DC heroes before, from Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora to X-Men disco-star superhero Dazzler.

While not yet as famous as Peter Parker, Cindy has had plenty of adventures and regularly appears in her own comics, with a new series coming in 2022. A Korean-American hero, Silk has undergone some changes since Spider-Man released her from Ezekiel’s vault, reconnecting with family and struggling to adapt to a world that passed her by in many ways, especially in terms of technology. Happily, her preference for the old-school has at least endeared her to J. Jonah Jameson, and the two have struck up a mentor/mentee relationship similar to that between Jameson and the teenage Peter Parker.

Another change made to Silk in more recent comics is that her and Peter’s pheromones no longer make them irresistibly attracted to each other – a detail which later writers dropped and which original writer Dan Slott (who created Cindy alongside Humberto Ramos) has since called a mistake on his part. Cindy has since joined the Agents of Atlas and fought the feline demon Kasha, helping to save the world many times over.

While Croft is no stranger to depicting even the most obscure comic heroes, Silk’s profile is currently on the rise. Amazon Studios has plans for a Silk TV show, introducing Cindy to live action, and her comic career continues to go from strength to strength. While Silk’s costume may have evolved since her first appearance – now made of fabric rather than her own webbing – so has her popularity, and Melissa Croft’s body paint cosplay is an awesome tribute to a Spider-Man character who very quickly took on a life of her own.
