SpiderMan Finally Ditches His Worst Suit Ever

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man: King’s Ransom #1

In Marvel Comics’ new giant-sized issue of Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker finally gets rid of the new suit given to him by J. Jonah Jameson and Threats and Menaces, Marvel’s version of Buzzfeed. While the suit was certainly high-tech and advanced, it did come with a moral cost that was fairly compromising for the Webslinger. Spider-Man had essentially turned into a big sell-out with the suit, so it’s nice to see him finally figuring things out as he begins his new battle with the Kingpin over the pieces of the Lifeline Tablet.

In recent issues of Amazing Spider-Man from Nick Spencer Patrick Gleason, Federico Vicentini, and Federico Sabbatini, Spider-Man sold out…big time. Threats and Menaces created a new suit for him which made Peter stronger and faster, but it also featured a plethora of micro-cameras installed so TnM subscribers could view the action from his point of view. However, it gets worse as Spider-Man’s heroics have increasingly become monetized. Naturally, it was all headed by J. Jonah Jameson, who’s never been Spider-Man’s biggest supporter. Not only were there polls for which moves Spider-Man should use, but subscribers were also submitting their own one-liners for Peter to say, all while sponsors flashed holographic ads from his suit. This all came with a rather large paycheck for Spider-Man, which is why he agreed to this awful idea in the first place.

Thankfully, Amazing Spider-Man: King’s Ransom #1 from Nick Spencer, Rogê Antonio, Carlos Gomez, and Zé Carlós sees Spider-Man returning to form. Apparently, the final straw was when Jameson unveiled remote piloted Pro-Spider Slayers, allowing subscribers to get in the action and “help” Spidey and the heroes he called in to save the day (though they ultimately did more harm than good). Furthermore, when Spider-Man and Boomerang found the final piece of the Lifeline Tablet, the worthiness of the person would be tested, with only a true hero being able to claim it. As a result, Spider-Man decided to abandon his new suit, feeling as though he hadn’t been acting like a real hero with it on.

Clearly, Spider-Man made the right choice, as he was granted the final piece of the Lifeline Tablet (and didn’t die as a result). Ditching the new threads had to have been a big part of it, seeing as how being a sell-out and compromising his values wasn’t all that heroic on Spider-Man’s part. While it does mean that he’s going to lose out on that sweet paycheck, it’s ultimately for the best.

Unfortunately, Spider-Man did end up losing the final piece and Kingpin ultimately got what he wanted by the issue’s end, resurrecting his son. Even so, it’s nice to see that Spider-Man has finally gone back to being the hero he should have always been, complete with his return to the classic red and blue. While it’s probably going to cause an all-new rift with Jameson, it still seems worth it to no longer have Spider-Man as the Marvel Universe’s biggest sell-out.
