Now that Insomniac Games has released the second installment of their Spider-Man game universe, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has proved that not only do they understand what makes the hero great; they’ve mastered it. While Spider-Man is just one in a long line of superheroes, what separates him from the others is that he’s just a regular person dealing with real problems.
Spider-Man is one of the world’s most popular characters because he’s more than just a superhero beating up bad guys; he’s the embodiment of the idea that anyone can be a hero. When Insomniac released Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018, part of the reason it was so well-received was because there was a real investment into Peter Parker. Players weren’t just swinging around as Spider-Man the whole game, there was down time where they got to spend some time with Peter the person. Perhaps the greatest example of this was when Peter was having problems with the status of his relationship with MJ and the two were exchanging text messages; it was a small sequence, but one that just about everyone could relate to.
With Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Insomniac has continued to show how good they are at writing this hero with Miles. Insomniac made an incredibly wise decision to heavily root Miles within his Puerto Rican community, as he lives in a very strong cultural area of Harlem. The nonchalant use of English, Spanish and even sign languages while taking brief moments to help people with menial tasks makes Miles feel like an incredibly genuine part of a real community. When the suit comes off and Miles Morales is just walking down the street, players get to experience the sense of belonging surrounding him, and it’s incredibly well crafted.
Miles Morales Puts The “Friendly Neighborhood” in Spider-Man
At the core, Spider-Man’s relatability is tied to the “friendly neighborhood” moniker. Whether it’s Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or anyone else, Spider-Man is just a regular person doing their best to help the people around them. In this case, Miles takes the time to go rescue the local bodega owner’s cat or investigate why local shops have had their supplies stolen. Sure, he’s trying to save the city from what’s going on at Roxxon, but he doesn’t forget the little guy along the way. They’re not big flashy tasks, but they’re the ones that are so critical to Spider-Man being such a grounded character.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is really just a half-sequel, but it’s a really important game because of what it’s done for Miles. At the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter had begun training Miles and both characters would presumably be playable in Spider-Man 2. While that could have been done in a way that worked, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has given players an opportunity to get to know Miles as he develops into his own character without having to be tied directly to Peter, and Insomniac Games has done a great job with it.
