Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales tops the UK’s weekly physical sales chart after a restock of PlayStation 5 consoles. Due to a combination of the ongoing semiconductor shortage and rampant scalping, the PS5 has been borderline impossible to find for some fans since its November release.

In spite of this, the PlayStation 5 is already expected to become profitable for Sony after less than a year on the market. Customer demand for the console is still high, and part of that’s driven by the desire to play the superior versions of new and upcoming PlayStation exclusives, including Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The spin-off of the PS4-exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man has been praised across the board for a variety of reasons, and it’s earned several sales records to match. With the PS5 gradually becoming more available, Spider-Man: Miles Morales sales are beginning to jump back up as a result.

According to GfK UK boxed game sales report for the week ending in May 29, as shared by GamesIndustry.biz, shows a recent influx of available PS5 consoles in the UK has helped Spider-Man: Miles Morales become the top-selling physical game for the week, beating out Biomutant during its own launch week. This marks the second time that the PlayStation exclusive has topped the UK sales chart, having previously done so in March 2021.

Biomutant has been denied a No.1 in the UK boxed charts because a number of PS5s went on sale last week, which caused a surge in sales of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game is no.1 for a second time this year

Though exact sales figures for the past week aren’t known, is that clear that greater availability of PlayStation 5 consoles helps boost the sales of exclusives, even when they’re cross-gen releases. While Spider-Man: Miles Morales is also available on PS4 -and those sales are also counted here, as well – the game is considered a de facto PS5 launch title, much like how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is most widely considered a Nintendo Switch launch title, despite also being the last-ever title sold for the Wii U. The PS5’s hardware allows for some more defining graphical and performance upgrades that the PS4 version can’t match, such Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ muscle deformation upgrade.

Considering the superhero game’s positive reception, it makes sense that so many players are still getting their hands on the game over half-a-year after launch. Unfortunately for many of them, getting a PS5 is the barrier keeping many away from enjoying one of the latest PlayStation exclusives. What this report shows is that despite how well Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold, its sales could be even greater if the PS5 was more readily available.
