Box office projections for the highly anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home have taken a significant hit. Following the world premiere for the film, which releases in theatres this Thursday, December 17, the first wave of reviews are in. The vast majority of critics have given Spider-Man: No Way Home a glowing review, praising its sheer entertainment value. In fact, the film temporarily held a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% immediately after its debut. However, the Phase 4 movie has also been criticised by some for the size of its cast, and for an over-reliance on previous Spider-Man films.
Spider-Man: No Way Home built up so much hype and momentum that when tickets went on pre-sale they smashed previous records and crashed multiple ticket websites. The anticipation surrounding the film is largely attributable to the inclusion of villains from previous Spider-Man movies, directed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb. Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe reprise their respecitve roles as Doc Ock and Green Goblin, while Jamie Foxx returns as Electro, Rhys Ifans as Lizard and Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. The returns of old villains, thanks to the multiverse concept, has led fans to speculate on the potential for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the webslinger to return as well. All the anticipation has led to massive box office projections for the film’s opening weekend, with previous estimates placing the box office figure for No Way Home’s opening weekend at $190-250 million. This would beat out the opening weekend for any other previous Spider-Man film, despite box office results still struggling due to the ongoing pandemic.
However, box office projections for the film have now been significantly reduced. Now, Variety reports that Sony Pictures, the film’s distributor, has projected that the film is likely to bring in around $130 million on its opening weekend, which is as much as $120 million lower than previously estimated. The figure would still be the highest for any film since the pandemic began, and Spider-Man: No Way Home still looks set to be the highest-grossing film since early 2020.
Sony Pictures could be downplaying its expectations, and the film looks likely to draw in more than the company’s official projection. With a lower public estimate, Sony is able to state that the film has exceeded expectations more easily than if it stuck with more optimistic projections of above $190 million. Another factor that could be significant in Sony Pictures’ lower estimate is the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant. Cinemas will understandably be fearing the impact that the variant could have on attendance, and will be looking to Spider-Man: No Way Home to keep revenue coming in for the next month, at least.
Whether or not Spider-Man: No Way Home makes $130 or $250 million on its opening weekend, the film is sure to be the MCU’s most commercially successful release since the beginning of Phase 4. After Chloé Zhao’s Eternals was somewhat of a critical and commercial disappointment, those in charge of the MCU will be hoping that Spider-Man: No Way Home can get the mega-franchise back on track. With the film’s theatrical release now imminent, fans won’t have to wait long until they get to see whether Spider-Man: No Way Home lives up to the hype for themselves, and hopefully many of them will be there in person if they can be.
