Warning! Spoilers for Non-Stop Spider-Man #5 ahead!

Spider-Man has shown that he can navigate being a rage-filled brute better than Bruce Banner can, using his intelligence and discernment in places that would make him a better fit as Hulk. Though Banner’s genius-level intellect and capacity for reason is lost in his shift into Marvel’s Jade Giant, Parker’s brilliance and moral judgment cannot be similarly suppressed. When placed into similar situations, the webslinger makes decisions that reveal how his superpowers are complemented by brainpower that does not quit or surrender, even in impossible circumstances.

Bruce Banner is well-known for allowing his anger to transform him into Hulk, a massive force of nature who leaves indiscriminate destruction in his wake. Though Hulk tends towards heroism, his penchant for impulsiveness and collateral damage is high despite the fact that Banner himself is a genius capable of thinking strategically. It is likely that Hulk’s rage is escalated by his low intelligence compared to Banner’s. That is what makes this transformation compelling and tragic. Too often, Hulk is completely at the mercy of his temper.

In Non-Stop Spider-Man #5 by writer Joe Kelly and artists Chris Bachalo, Cory Smith and Gerardo Sandoval, Spider-Man proves that his own critical thinking skills persist, even when his anger and rage are escalated suddenly. As Spider-Man is consumed with an unrelenting urge for violence, Peter Parker still keeps his wits about him. The webslinger wrestles with his altered state, as demonstrated through dialogue with his angry self, which only wants to hurt and kill his enemies. While all this is going on, he still has the wherewithal to improvise in a potentially dangerous situation, grabbing a sword to break the surface tension of the water he is hurtling towards. This is a powerful reminder that Parker’s genius is among the most underestimated in comics. Performing this type of intellectual feat is something that Bruce Banner does not typically pull off when he is Hulk.

Rescuing Zemo after Herr Wolf’s betrayal, even though he is a villain and a target of Spider-Man’s hate, also shows that his morality exists even as he is reduced to his most primal level. His adherence to his principles while in a rage-filled condition is proof that Spider-Man’s unwavering belief in Uncle Ben’s mantra “with great power comes great responsibility” is a superpower in itself. In an altered state that has allowed his anger to take the reins, Parker’s desire to do what is right succeeds in keeping his worst impulses in check. His will is just too strong to allow him to smash his way to solutions. Though Spider-Man’s sense of responsibility is often questioned, it frequently helps him more than it hurts him.

Putting Peter Parker into a situation that mirrors that of Hulk provides greater insight into the aspects of his character that may get taken for granted. In addition to web-swinging and wall-crawling, his genius-level intellect is paired with creativity, a strong moral compass, and a boundless capacity to improvise. That is why Spider-Man’s personality and skills mean Peter Parker is better suited to control Hulk than Bruce Banner is.
