Spider-Man Remastered Getting Ray Tracing Performance Update On PS5

One Insomniac Games developer has said Spider-Man Remastered should be getting a Performance RT Graphics Mode on PS5 sometime “soon.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will sometime “soon” receive Performance RT mode on PlayStation 5, which will allow players to run the game at 60fps with ray tracing enabled. This particular detail comes on the heels of developer Insomniac Games recently dropping the same Performance RT mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales launched with two different Graphics Modes in tow on Sony’s new console. In Performance Mode, Miles can swing around the city in dynamic 4K at a smooth 60fps. Meanwhile, the title’s Fidelity Mode runs 4K at 30fps, with ray tracing to boot. Essentially, players were forced to pick enhanced visuals over higher frame rates. That all changed yesterday, however, when Insomniac stealth released Miles Morales’ newest patch, introducing the aforementioned Performance RT Graphics Mode. In selecting Performance RT, players can get the game’s stunning ray-traced visuals, while still swinging through New York in 60fps.

It appears the best of both worlds will soon make the leap to Spider-Man Remastered, as well. James Stevenson, Insomniac Games’ Community Director, recently responded to a fan on Twitter, who wondered whether the new mode would eventually land on the first Spider-Man game’s native PS5 version. According to Stevenson, such an update for Spider-Man Remastered should go live sometime “soon.” A separate post from the Community Director cleared up another bit of confusion, too. Regarding questions of which resolution Performance RT functions in, Stevenson divulged: “We have a base resolution behind the scenes but use temporal injection to create the final 4K frame. The base resolution is lowest in Performance RT mode.” As of writing, though, it remains unclear which resolution Miles Morales’ Performance RT Mode targets.

Like the mode’s addition in Miles Morales, Performance RT could offer an even more glorious way of experiencing the thrills of Peter Parker’s adventure on PlayStation 5. Ray-traced reflections are still a very young technological practice. That it has already been implemented in console games is nothing short of an impressive feat. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see how developers on consoles continue to experiment with the technology’s possibilities, especially as they relate to other advanced features.

Spider-Man Remastered launched in mid-November, but the only way to access it is by owning a copy of Miles Morales on PlayStation 5, as well. Still, there are benefits to owning the remaster outside of the gorgeous visual upgrade. Notably, those who played the original on PS4 can transfer their save data to the PS5’s remaster and unlock all previously earned Trophies, including the Platinum.
