SpiderMan The 10 Most Obscure Villains In Marvel Comics

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home is a showcase for a host of iconic Spider-Man villains such as Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and others. More villains could make an appearance as well, but it’s unlikely any of them will be among the obscure members of Spider-Man’s extensive rogues gallery. For all the icons he’s fought over the years, there have also been a lot of also-rans.

In his nearly 60 years of comic book history, Spider-Man has spent a lot of time fighting obscure villains who never reached all-star status like the Venom or even the Vulture. Nevertheless, many of them still have a fond place in the hearts of comic book readers and as a result, could potentially make an appearance in No Way Home, or in the future.

Grizzly

Most of Spider-Man’s villains are themed in some way with animals. Grizzly is one of the least successful, perhaps because his costume is so literal. Maxwell Markham, just one of four characters named Grizzly in Marvel Comics, is perhaps the most recognizable to fans. He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #139 wearing what seemed to be a complete bearskin.

The suit is actually an exoskeleton that gets progressively more advanced in the modern comics, but despite his best efforts, The Grizzly remains on the lower tier of Spider-Man villains in the comics.

Stegron The Dinosaur Man

Another animal-themed obscurity is Stegron The Dinosaur Man, who made his comics debut in Marvel Team-Up #19 back in 1974. Comic book fans know The Lizard got his powers experimenting on reptiles, and it’s through Dr. Curt Connors that Stegron gets his powers, too. Stegron injected himself with dinosaur DNA and transformed into a human-dinosaur hybrid.

Despite his connection to The Lizard and Stegosaurus-like appearance, Stegron never really landed with readers, though he’s made sporadic appearances throughout the years in a number of comic books, including Venom.

Hammerhead

Hammerhead probably owes his obscurity in the comics to his being too much of a relic from an era of comics Spider-Man and Marvel had largely left behind. Hammerhead debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #113 with a broad, flattened head that gave him the appearance of any number of classic Dick Tracy villains.

Hammerhead has a surgically implanted skull plate of vibranium he uses to smash through objects, making him dangerous, but not iconic. He has made a number of appearances in the comics, but never really broke through as a major Spider-Man villain.

Calypso

Calypso is one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe, but she’s never risen above the ranks of Spider-Man’s more obscure villains. She is a voodoo priestess who encountered Spider-Man through Kraven The Hunter, with whom she had a deeply strange and chaotic relationship.

After Kraven died in the classic “Kraven’s Last Hunt” storyline in the 1980s, she sought revenge against Spider-Man by manipulating The Lizard into attacking him. Despite her central role in some of Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man comics, she didn’t become a major villain.

Slyde

Slyde is kind of like the Silver Surfer, except without the Power Cosmic. A chemical substance of his own invention allows him to slide easily and swiftly across any surface, which he then used to rob banks. This gimmick wasn’t enough to help him against Spider-Man, even though his webbing was of no use against the villain.

Slyde first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #272 in 1986. He never graduated into the ranks of major Spider-Man villains, remaining in obscurity despite stints with both The Masters of Evil and Thunderbolts in later years.

The Human Fly

A fair number of Spider-Man villains have insect-themed costumes, like the Tarantula. One of the most obscure is the Human Fly, who was actually pretty powerful. He had compound eyes, allowing him to see behind him, and he could fly as well. His super strength made things hard on Spider-Man, but he didn’t become a breakout star.

Perhaps due to his costume, which was relatively uninspired compared to other iconic Spider-Man villains, the Human Fly has maintained a very obscure following in the comics since his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #10.

Crime-Master

Despite being co-created by Steve Ditko, the co-creator of Spider-Man and one of the best Spider-Man artists ever, Crime Master has remained one of the most obscure villains. While some of Spider-Man’s villains have achieved a kind of novelty among fans, Crime Master has not. His relative simplicity made him somewhat forgettable, despite the fact he was only an early all of the Green Goblin.

Another wrinkle for the Crime Master is that he’s died and returned as different people a number of times, with none of the versions of the stories associated with them making that big of an impression with Spider-Man fans.

Stilt-Man

Stilt-Man is one of the silliest Spider-Man villains in the comics, but the inherent corniness of a man walking on giant stilts has endeared him to fans to the point he was recently made into a Marvel Legends action figure. Nevertheless, he’s a pretty obscure character in the comics, despite the fact he’s one of the most visually recognizable Spider-Man villains.

Wilbur Day actually first appeared in Daredevil #8 but eventually became associated with Spider-Man. Despite his taking on two of Marvel’s biggest superheroes, he never grew beyond being a single-issue threat or later, a joke.

Spot

Spot is a character fans could easily confuse for Polka-Dot Man, one of Batman’s most laughable supervillains. As a result, he’s pretty obscure and rarely used in the comics. Spot leads to some of Spider-Man’s funniest fights and adventures, thanks to his power to create portals to other dimensions within his own body.

Though it leads to some zany comic book panels. the goofiness of the character has undercut him in more recent years, leading to his relative obscurity in the comics.

Big Wheel

One of the most obscure Spider-Man villains in the comics is Big Wheel, a villain who like a lot of others was an inventor motivated by greed. For him, it took the form of a wheel-shaped tank. Big Wheel had a lot more firepower than many Spider-Man villains, but his invention didn’t translate into success. In fact, Big Wheel died in his first appearance, The Amazing Spider-Man #183.

Big Wheel drowns in the Hudson River after becoming trapped in his own creation. This follows a fight with Spider-Man that scales skyscrapers. Unfortunately for Big Wheel, he didn’t have Spider-Man’s wall-crawling ability.
