SpiderMans Secret Powers That Everyone Forgot About

Spider-Man’s superpowers are iconic. He’s got super strength, spider-sense, can shoot webs, and swings from buildings — basically he can do whatever a spider can. He’s Spider-Man! But he had powers beyond that, ones everyone has forgotten. Given to him by The Other.

When Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, he was given a slew of superhuman powers. While everyone knows about his web-slinging and super strength, there are many other powers that Peter received — not from the bite of a spider, but later in life, from a spider-like god known as The Other. The Other gave Spider-Man a serious upgrade to his power set, even if the new abilities had next to nothing to do with spiders. With greater power comes greater responsibility, but in this case, Marvel didn’t seem to think so… since most of the new powers were not seen again after the storyline concluded.

“The Other” was a 2005-06 storyline that spanned multiple Spider-Man titles across a 12-issue arc, written by Peter David, Reginald Hudlin, and J. Michael Straczynski. Over the four acts of the story, Peter is taken on a physically and emotionally difficult journey after he discovers he is dying. After experiencing blackouts, dizziness, and odd dreams, Peter was seriously looking off his game, and ultimately suffered a gunshot wound while fighting a villain named the Tracer. Peter goes to see Dr. Castillo at Captain America’s suggestion, who takes a blood sample while treating the gunshot wound. After analyzing his blood, Dr. Castillo informs Peter that, despite being a superhuman superhero, he is slowly dying.

After going to see Mr. Fantastic, Peter discovers that his condition is a result of a radiation-based infectious disease. Peter then goes on to seek help from the smartest minds in the Marvel Universe to find a cure. Bruce Banner tells Peter that the rate of the infection is spreading too quickly for a cure to be developed in time. Even Doctor Strange is unable to cure Peter, and he tells Peter that he should accept his fate, and prepare himself for death.

Peter has always used web-slinging as a way to clear his head and silence his thoughts. While doing so, the villain Morlun attacks Spider-Man, and a brutal fight that crosses the city ensues. Morlun, unaffected by the fight, ends it after ripping out Spider-Man’s eye, leaving him unconscious and bloody on the floor as the police show up. Morlun leaves, with a plan to come back to drain his life force when Peter is alone. Morlun arrives at the hospital to finish Peter off, and shoves Mary-Jane off to the side, breaking her arm. The unconscious Spider-Man suddenly awakes, using the last of his strength he viciously attacks Morlun. An animalistic side of Peter takes over, allowing Peter to bare sharp teeth and stingers that protrude from his wrists. He pins Morlun to the floor with his stingers, and Peter bites into the neck of Morlun appearing to kill him.

Having cleared the threat, Peter slumps to the ground, says goodbye to MJ, and dies. To conceal Spider-Man’s identity and death, Iron Man takes his body to the Avengers headquarters. Later that night, a crash is heard from the room Peter’s body is kept. Going to investigate, Mary-Jane and the New Avengers find Peter’s corpse hollowed out — all that is left is the skin. A few rare types of spiders are capable of shedding their skin to begin anew, and it appears Peter has inherited that ability. Days later, Peter is asleep under the Brooklyn bridge inside a cocoon, having strange dreams.

Accused of being too scared to be the true Spider-Man, a voice tells Peter he never actually knew what he truly was. Peter only focused on the ‘Man’ part of Spider-Man, unable to embrace the ‘Spider’ side in the same way. The voice reveals that while Morlun killed the man, the Spider killed Morlun. The next step in Peter’s evolution means that to be reborn, he must accept the Spider and the Man on equal terms, like never before. But the voice also makers it clear: doing so means opening himself up to the possibility of being reborn… very differently. Accepting the deal, Peter Parker is at last reborn — emerging anew from the cocoon, completely naked but restored. His wounds have healed, and to the delight of comic book fans everywhere looking to forget the comic panels from above, his missing eye has returned. But to make things even better, over the coming days, Peter will discover that he is not exactly the man that he was before. By embracing the Other, Spider-Man gets organic web-shooters instead of his famous wrist-mounted gadgets. But that is only the beginning of his new abilities.

Spider-Man discovers that he still has the stingers that protrude from his wrists. When rescuing people from a collapsed building he also discovers a new set of powers: night vision and the ability to feel vibrations through his webbing help him in locating the people trapped among the debris. While rescuing someone he discovers his ability to stick to walls with his hands and feet has now extended to his back — allowing him to carry people out with relative ease. He also discovered he now has the ability to communicate with spiders. These new powers have been granted to him because he has now embraced the Other.

While the concept of ‘the Other’ has come up in storylines since Peter’s new powers have disappeared since the conclusion of the 12-part storyline. The stingers have been stated to come out only when Spider-Man is facing specific magical threats, and the organic web-shooters simply disappeared with the conclusion of the One More Day storyline. His night vision and sticky back have also disappeared, like the rest of his new powers they have simply been forgotten.
