SpiderVerse 2 Oscar Isaac Had One Condition for SpiderMan 2099 Return

Oscar Isaac had one condition for returning as Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Introduced in the after-credit moment of the Academy Award-winning animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara was seen traveling the multiverse encountering the Spider-Men from the animated 1960’s television series recreating the famous Spider-Man pointing meme. While a fun joke in the context of the film, it became clear that the future version of Spider-Man would play a major role in an upcoming Spider-Verse sequel.

Created by Peter David and Ricky Leonardi in 1992, Miguel O’Hara hails from a future New York in the year 2099 where he is gifted spider powers and battles the fictional mega-corporation Alchemax. Spider-Man 2099 has been a popular variant of Spider-Man since his introduction and has been included in video games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time as well as a playable suit in the PS4 Spider-Man game. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse marked the characters first-ever film appearance, and for the role, the creators enlisted the ever-talented Oscar Isaac, who is no stranger to the realm of superheroes as he previously played Apocalpyse in X-Men: Apocalypse and will star as Moon Knight in the upcoming MCU series for Disney+.

Though before he agreed to return for the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1, Isaac had one condition for the creative team. In a recent EW interview with Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, they reveal Isaac’s biggest worry was he didn’t want his character to be boring. “Oscar Isaac has one condition of taking the gig: ‘Don’t make me boring.’ He’s made a really complex character out of Miguel O’Hara, and he’s definitely not boring.”

Isaac’s one condition is possibly in response to his performance as Apocalypse as the actor has been critical of the film, saying X-Men: Apocalypse was a nightmare and one most critics and audiences saw as a generic supervillain. Given Miguel O’Hara’s backstory and overall mythology, there are plenty of angles for the filmmakers and Isaac to explore and contrast with the various other Spider-Man characters. The film will see the return of Miles Morales, Peter B. Parker, and Spider-Gwen as well as the introduction of Spider-Woman and the Japanese Spider-Man, and the filmmakers have hinted at even more alternate Spider-Mans appearing.

What type of complexities Isaac will bring to Spider-Man 2099 remain to be seen, but given the massive scope of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – with Part 1 set to open in theaters in 2022 with Part 2 will release in 2023 – it appears there will be plenty of time to develop his character. With various Spider-Man projects being developed by Sony across live-action and animation, it is likely that the studio is looking at Spider-Man 2099 to lead his own animated solo film. Isaac’s schedule is busy with various film and television series, but given the flexibility of voice recording, it could be one of many high-profile leading projects for the actor.
