Although there’s a particular formula the Saw series adheres to, Spiral, the recently released ninth film in the franchise, chose to be a little different. The movie is set within the same universe but has a standalone story that makes use of specific details from earlier installments while doing its own thing otherwise.

Of course, the connections to the Jigsaw Killer are acknowledged, with the Chris Rock-led film looking into how a copycat of the villain would work. All in all, Spiral adapted the essential components, like the presence of death traps, while ditching several other aspects that the Saw series was known to feature in abundance.

Note: This article contains spoilers for Spiral.

10 Returned: The “Hello Zepp” Theme

This has been heard in all of the Saw movies to date and is a mainstay of the series. It’s a key detail mainly due to the fact that the music begins just when the climax is amping up, signaling the reveal of the big plot twist.

Spiral reserved it for the closing seconds when William Schenk gave Zeke the choice to either apprehend him or save his father. It wouldn’t feel like a Saw movie if “Hello Zepp” didn’t make its presence known and that’s likely why it was retained.

9 Left Out: Billy The Puppet

There’s little argument against the claim that Billy the Puppet is the most iconic thing to come out of the Saw series. It appeared in each movie as a way for Jigsaw to communicate the rules of the game to his victims.

Spiral ditched Billy altogether in favor of a new puppet, which made total sense in terms of the plot. This is because Jigsaw was never involved to begin with, and Schenk didn’t have access to Billy. Along with that, the movie aimed to make it clear that this was a copycat in the works.

8 Returned: Traps Tying Into The Story

This is a vital aspect of the Saw series as no traps are shown just for the heck of it. Each one of them is meant to tie in with the story, with even the traps in the cold open having connections to the main characters that are revealed later.

Spiral embraced this detail more so than the other movies, as Zeke chased after the killer through the clues left in the traps. Moreover, the victims of these games were all characters whom Schenk had a vendetta against, making their traps allegories for their crimes.

7 Left Out: The Practice Of Recruiting Apprentices

The Saw series became about the struggle for Jigsaw’s legacy, starting from Saw II itself, as every movie’s plot had to do with Jigsaw’s apprentices. Spiral had the benefit of acknowledging all the past apprentices and could have used this detail as its story but chose to overlook it entirely.

In its place, the story was firmly about a Jigsaw copycat who had nothing to do with the original killer. The movie only made a small reference to Jigsaw’s accomplices, apart from which this aspect was dropped.

6 Returned: The Killer’s Use Of Tapes

This detail was employed in a minor way for Spiral, where the killer copied Jigsaw’s practice of using pre-recorded material to give the rules of the game. Still, it’s something that the Saw series prided itself upon, and using it here acknowledged that connection.

Spiral also made the villain appear in person to the protagonist in the finale, something the original movies had also reserved for special occasions, such as when Jigsaw interacted with William Easton and Adam Stanheight, among others.

5 Left Out: The Theme Of Cherishing Life

The franchise is actually pretty thought-provoking since a lot of it has to do with the idea of cherishing one’s life. However, Spiral had Schenk twist Jigsaw’s intentions to simply use the traps as a way to gain revenge and he had no interest in Jigsaw’s true philosophy.

The movie left out this detail to separate Schenk from Jigsaw. The latter’s message could never come across as he had intended because characters like Schenk only focused on the killing aspect instead of making victims appreciate their lives.

4 Returned: The Villain Being Part Of The Games The Whole Time

Jigsaw was said to be someone who liked to “have front-row seats to his twist games,” with Saw II and Saw IV also showing Amanda Young and Hoffman pretending to be victims themselves to ensure they were part of the games.

This detail has generally been present in movies where the villain’s identity is unknown and Spiral adapted it as well. Schenk was involved with Zeke in the mission to apprehend the copycat and was made to appear as if he had been killed off in a trap himself, only to reveal he was orchestrating the whole thing.

3 Left Out: Points Of View Of The Antagonist

An interesting detail about the Saw series was that the villains were usually the point of view characters. This was done to make viewers understand Jigsaw’s mindset and decide if he was right or wrong. The later movies focused on Mark Hoffman and Logan Nelson’s narrative.

Spiral left this out in favor of using Zeke as the point-of-view character, meaning there was a full-on protagonist who didn’t have any villainous motives. This makes Spiral much different compared to other movies in the series as viewers are encouraged to think in line with Zeke’s mindset.

2 Returned: Callbacks To Previous Movies

Continuity is heavily featured in Saw movies, to the point where it’s necessary to know what happened previously to understand the current plot. Even if that isn’t the case, certain callbacks are made, such as references to the Bathroom Trap or the Reverse Beartrap.

Spiral employed this detail to confirm that it was indeed set in the same Saw universe with references to Jigsaw’s death (a picture of his corpse is briefly shown) and dialogue acknowledging the events of Jigsaw as the work of another copycat. Not to mention Jigsaw’s spiral symbol being used as Schenk’s tribute to the villain.

1 Left Out: The Presence Of Jigsaw

Movies like Jigsaw and Saw 3D had kept the involvement of John Kramer minimal but the essential detail of his presence was still adapted by revealing his connections to the characters. Spiral, on the other hand, did away with Jigsaw altogether.

The only thing Jigsaw had to do with Spiral was being the inspiration for Schenk to dole out his brand of justice through placing victims in traps. With the story, Schenk never met Jigsaw and the latter never knew of his status as a copycat since he died a decade prior.
