[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

The many series inspired by The Witcher books have had an incredible set of villains, and the game series is no exception to that trend. One villain from the Hearts of Stone DLC from The Witcher 3 has made a powerful impression on players and deserves a revisit in the next game in the series.

Gaunter O’Dimm is a mysterious figure that introduces himself to Geralt in an early quest in The Witcher 3 and disappears from the story until the remarkable Hearts of Stone DLC. Considering the way that he is both brought into the world of The Witcher and is so ambiguously removed, there is room for another encounter with the mischievous, god-like being.

Gaunter O’Dimm’s Introduction

[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

When Gaunter first appears in The Witcher 3, he helps Geralt with a quest before leaving for the remainder of the game. The short conversation the two have, though, implies that the character may have more going on about him than most would assume. This becomes the way that the player first learns about Dandelion and his songs about Geralt, as well as the Witcher’s title as the Butcher of Blaviken, a familiar nickname from fans of the Netflix series.

However, if players never played Hearts of Stone, then that would be all there is to Gaunter O’Dimm. He would be nothing more than a helpful NPC who guides Geralt on his search for Yennefer, albeit one who is uncommonly in-the-know and kind to a man he refers to as a butcher. Instead, he would simply join the long list of Witcher 3 plot holes, with the mysterious character blending into the scenery.

Mysterious Powers, Even for The Witcher

[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

Once players begin the Hearts of Stone DLC, they are reintroduced to Gaunter O’Dimm through a magical pact that the character seals with a sigil burned into Geralt’s face. Beyond that, it is revealed that the mysterious character has made a deal with Olgierd von Everec, the immortal central character of the DLC. It’s left fairly ambiguous exactly what the extent of his powers are, but they are seemingly related to his nickname as the Master of Mirrors and far outshine even Geralt’s strongest skills.

However, the most impressive power that Gaunter seems to possess is his ability to stop time and interact with the now frozen world around him. The character uses these powers multiple times throughout Hearts of Stone, although one moment definitely stands out more than the others. These types of powers are uncommon in The Witcher series, generally deligated to extremely powerful beings such as deities, mythical creatures, and the wish granting Djinn.

The Spoon

[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

This is the moment that solidifies Gaunter as a true Witcher 3 villain, as he kills a man for no reason beyond being interrupted by a drunken fool. The wooden spoon has become the symbol of Gaunter, both in and out of the game. Even the character’s Gwent card includes the iconic wooden spoon, implying that the utensil is the villain’s chosen tool of destruction.

At this point, players are already fairly aware that Gaunter isn’t exactly the hero of this story, but having him shove a wooden spoon in a man’s eye after stopping time puts him on Handsome Jack levels of villainy. It’s a choice that the character makes to both kill an otherwise innocent man who unwittingly interrupted him, and show Geralt exactly what he thinks of human life. This sets Gaunter apart from the Witcher who spends the game, book, and Netflix series always working to protect any sentient creature that he can, regardless of how dangerous.

Is He Evil?

[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

After talking about how Gaunter murdered a man with a spoon, it’s hard to make an argument for how he might not be what truly fits the bill of “evil” in the way characters like the Crones do. Although, when going through the story of what he has done to Olgierd and how he tends to treat people who make deals with him, it’s a fair bit more ambiguous than a standard, cut and dry villain. Even when dealing with Geralt, he doesn’t seem to necessarily be working nefariously, even if he does seem to value human (or otherwise sentient) life to a lower degree than the Witcher does.

What Gaunter does do, however, is give people choices and revel in them having to live with the consequences of those choices. In fact, the power of the choices in Hearts of Stone are the backbone of the entire DLC, and to a degree, this trickster deity has a lesson to impart about the freedom of choice. So, while Gaunter seems to be entirely out for himself, and is fully willing to kill for almost no reason, he appears to have the intention, or the result, of imparting lessons on those that he interacts with, at a price.

Gaunter O’Dimm’s Ambiguous Exit

[SPOILER] Should Return in The Witcher 4

If we’re looking at the future of the game series and the increasingly likely Witcher 4 announcement coming at some point after CD Projekt Red finishes Cyberpunk 2077, Gaunter O’Dimm’s “death” could clue into how he’ll be used later. When choosing to fight the imposing figure, the best Geralt is able to do is beat him at a game and force Gaunter to leave and remove the curse from Olgierd. Additionally, the character’s final words imply that Geralt will likely have another encounter with him in the future, and considering what he’s done to people before, it likely won’t be any good.

The final line reads as, “You are insignificant. You think you’ve defeated me, but you are wrong. I can’t be killed, I will be back,” with this implying Gaunter’s future in the series. With the grudge he certainly has against Geralt and the way that his final line specifically claims that he will return, players can be excited to see Gaunter O’Dimm to return in The Witcher 4, possibly even as the primary villain.

The Witcher 3 is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
