Spongebob Squarepants: 5 One-Off Characters Who Deserve Another Episode (& 5 Who Don’t)

Spongebob Squarepants has seen many characters come and go. Some interesting and some not so much. Here’s the ones that should and shouldn’t return.

As one of the longest-running cartoon series, SpongeBob SquarePants has cycled through a ton of characters. With so many episodes, the creative team behind the show has revived many minor characters from the past and built entire episodes around them (sort of like when The Simpsons made an entire episode about Moe’s bar rag).

With 262 episodes and counting, one might be hard-pressed to find any characters who appeared just one time on the show, much less 10. Fortunately, the world of Bikini Bottom is rich with depth and there are plenty of one-off characters on SpongeBob. The question of whether or not they should return is a different matter.

10 Return: Marty and Janet

In the episode, “I’m With Stupid,” Marty and Janet think they are Patrick’s parents. “Who are you people?” exclaims Patrick when he learns that they are actually Marty and Janet.

They might not be Patrick’s real parents, but Marty and Janet still have plenty of stories to tell, undoubtedly. Perhaps it’s time for fans to learn about their origins.

9 Don’t Return: Kevin

Kevin, the disgraced sea cucumber who used to be adored by many, has appeared again on SpongeBob, but only as a background Easter egg. His sole speaking role comes in “I’m Your Biggest Fanatic.”

While it is funny to hear SpongeBob ask, “Do you want it to hurt me, Kevin?” when he speaks to his idol, it seems like this one episode covered what needed to be said about celebrity worship. Any further appearances by Kevin would be too much of his obnoxiousness.

8 Return: Dennis

Shockingly, Dennis is a character who has only appeared once throughout the lore of SpongeBob and that was in the 2004 film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. In the movie, he was hired by Plankton to kill SpongeBob and Patrick.

Maybe his characterization was too dark for the small screen and that’s why he never returned. Either way, Dennis was a propulsive figure in the film and any scene with him was one that set a brand new tone for SpongeBob. That alone warrants a return.

7 Don’t Return: Richard

In the episode, “Graveyard Shift,” Richard is a nebbish fish who applies for a job at the Krusty Krab. He even brings his own spatula! However, SpongeBob and Squidward mistake him for the Hash-Slinging Slasher.

Richard clearly does not get the job at the Krusty Krab and it does not seem like there would be much else interesting about his character. However, further exploration into the lore behind the Hash-Slinging Slasher would certainly be welcome.

6 Return: Smitty WerbenJagerManJensen

Smitty has a very limited role in his sole appearance, which comes during the episode, “One Krabs Trash.” A dead fish who mostly exists in the episode as a skeleton, it seems like Smitty’s story is finished.

However, clearly “he was number one!” is calling out to a different story. How did Smitty become number one? A prequel is definitely in order for this character.

5 Don’t Return: Wormy

Wormy, Sandy’s pet caterpillar who turns into a butterfly, ends up indirectly (and through no fault of his own) destroying downtown Bikini Bottom as an alleged monster. This all takes place in the aptly named episode, “Wormy.”

There’s a big reason why Wormy should not return, though. The close-up footage of butterflies and insects is certainly off-putting and tough to watch for those who have phobias of bugs. Maybe Wormy is best left to the history of the show, rather than the future.

4 Return: Forest Ranger

“Magic. Conch. Shell? You mean like this?!” exclaims the forest ranger in the episode, “Club SpongeBob.” When SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward get lost in the Kelp Forest, he arrives to seemingly save the day.

Instead, he is just as goofy and beholden to the magic conch shell as Squidward has been. This fish is definitely an explorer with some adventures, though, and a side story that centers around him would be more than welcome.

3 Don’t Return: Squidette

In the episode, “Squidville,” Squidward moves to Tentacle Acres to finally be free from the chaos of his neighborhood in Bikini Bottom. It ends up backfiring, though, as he cannot deny the variety that SpongeBob and Patrick bring to his life.

Not all of the squids crave variety, though. When Squidward’s neighbors look for him, they end up asking Squidette if she is Squidward and she is clearly displeased by the mistaken identity. Seeing a Squidward clone like this with a different hairstyle and a new sweater is disconcerting, though. A return to Tentacle Acres is hopefully not in the cards.

2 Return: The Bomb Pie-rates

There are many different pirates in the SpongeBob world (Patchy, anyone?), but this particular group of swashbuckling seafarers only appeared one time, in the episode, “Dying for Pie.” There, they show up at the outset when they sell Squidward a pie that is actually a bomb.

It is very unclear what sort of pirates they are and what kind of business operation it is that they’re running exactly. However, an exploration into the bomb factory where a pie disguise comes into play would be worthwhile.

1 Don’t Return: The Artist

Every now and then, human characters show up on SpongeBob, shaking up the animation tendencies for a scene or two. In “Frankendoodle,” the episode begins and ends with one of these human characters, who is known simply as “the artist at sea.”

Sketching while on a boat in the middle of the ocean, the artist slips up and drops his pencil down to the ocean below. The pencil is used to create DoodleBob, while the artist is left with some sort of Twilight Zone scenario. He is entirely hapless, though, so any return of his character would only prove to be more frustrating for those who simply want him to finish his drawing. Not everyone can be Stephen Hillenburg, though.
