SpongeBob SquarePants Patchy the Pirates Nickelodeon Crossover Explained

The characters of SpongeBob SquarePants are unique to this universe, but there’s one that had the privilege of visiting other Nickelodeon shows, and it was none other than Patchy the Pirate. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants made its debut on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since become not only the most successful Nicktoon (surpassing popular shows like Rugrats and Hey Arnold!), but also one of the longest-running American animated series, with over 10 seasons and counting.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character and his friends (and a couple of enemies) from the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Though most of the characters in the series are sea animals, with the exception of Sandy Cheeks (a squirrel) and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy (humans), SpongeBob SquarePants has welcomed one very special character from the surface: Patchy the Pirate, played by Tom Kenny (who also voices good old SpongeBob). Patchy is the self-appointed #1 SpongeBob fan and president of the (fictional) SpongeBob SquarePants fan club founded by himself, with his house being filled with SpongeBob-themed merchandise. Patchy has hosted various special episodes and commercials, and he once crossed over into another Nickelodeon show, far away from Bikini Bottom.

Patchy is the only SpongeBob SquarePants character to cross over into another TV show from Nickelodeon, as everyone else has stuck to Bikini Bottom and wherever the movies take them (ironically, Patchy was famously left out of SpongeBob’s movies). In 2011, Patchy showed up in Big Time Rush’s TV movie Big Time Beach Party, where Patchy enlisted the help of two members of the band to help him find his family’s lost treasure. Patchy, Carlos, and Logan went on a treasure hunt, and together they found out that the chest was buried under the beach house of Griffin, the evil owner of the band’s record label.

Once they dug it up, Griffin showed up and collected the treasure as compensation for the damages caused to his house, and Patchy promised them to reunite with it. A behind-the-scenes promo for the movie revealed that Patchy’s interests are not only about SpongeBob SquarePants, as he’s also a big fan of Big Time Rush’s music. After that, Patchy returned to his place and continued to be all about SpongeBob and every special episode and event there could be. His most recent appearance was in “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”, where he went through a series of adventures on his quest to deliver a present to SpongeBob (which was his head in a box). After all those obstacles, Patchy finally met SpongeBob and sang the birthday song along with SpongeBob’s friends.

Although Patchy doesn’t show up often, he’s now a popular SpongeBob SquarePants character, and he not only holds the title of the only major live-action character (a title that, according to some, he shares with his puppet parrot, Potty) in the series but also the only one who was given permission to visit another world completely different to his and met some of Nickelodeon’s biggest and most popular stars.
