A new game starring Nickelodeon’s yellow mascot was announced as SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake at THQ Nordic’s 10-year anniversary digital showcase. Although SpongeBob has continued to appear in several Nickelodeon games in recent years and will be included in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s roster, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake will be the first all-new console release for the character since 2015’s SpongeBob HeroPants.

The Cosmic Shake comes hot on the heels of a very successful remake of SpongeBob’s best-remembered interactive adventure in Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. THQ Nordic’s remake of the platformer has sold over two million copies as of May 2021. As with SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, Battle for Bikini Bottom -Rehydrated was developed by Purple Lamp Studios, a company acquired by THQ Nordic in late 2020. The publisher made it clear in the past that it plans to remake or rerelease more Nickelodeon games in the future, but the runaway success of Battle for Bikini Bottom may have fast-tracked a proper sequel.

During its 10th Anniversary Showcase, THQ Nordic officially revealed SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, which appears to be full of reverence for the long-running cartoon’s golden age. Set to the tune of “Sweet Victory,” the announcement trailer features SpongeBob as a caveman, wearing his karate gloves, and riding a seahorse through the aquatic wild west. The game’s interdimensional plot is made possible thanks to SpongeBob’s dealings with Kassandra, a mysterious fortune teller debuting in The Cosmic Shake. Publisher THQ Nordic promises the game will feature more than 30 SpongeBob skins in total, and players will need to take advantage of them all in seven distinct alternate worlds linked by the fortune teller’s dimensional portals.

Though it has no release date yet, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is confirmed to be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is also confirmed to be a fully new adventure building off of Purple Lamp’s work on Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated. Patrick appears beside SpongeBob as a floating companion in the trailer, so he may serve in a similar capacity as Link’s fairy Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. No SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake gameplay has been shown yet, but official art also confirms that a wide cast of SpongeBob characters will appear in some capacity, including the often-overlooked Pearl and Larry the Lobster.

THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp appear to be stepping it up for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, creating an entirely new adventure to follow up on the nostalgia-fueled remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom. THQ’s gaming history with the invertebrate fry cook goes back a long way, leaving behind a gaming legacy that THQ Nordic is reviving with this new platformer. While players new to SpongeBob’s gaming exploits may have found Battle for Bikini Bottom to be set in its ways, this trip into the spongey multiverse could be a great point of entry for those who are new to the series’ games as much as it could be for classic platformer veterans.
