SpongeBob SquarePants Why Squidward Is Always So Miserable

SpongeBob SquarePants has introduced a variety of characters who live at the bottom of the ocean, but there’s one who’s close to the title character and stands out for always being either sad or angry: Squidward Tentacles, but why is he always sad? SpongeBob SquarePants has been around long enough to become part of pop culture and the most successful Nicktoon to date, and it shows no signs of stopping soon. The series was created by Stephen Hillenburg and premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999, and has since branched out to other media, adding to the success of SpongeBob and company.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the title character’s adventures in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, and he’s often accompanied by his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles, and his greedy boss Mr. Krabs, with his pet snail Gary also joining the fun sometimes. Although the show focuses on the sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, it has also followed the aforementioned characters quite closely, allowing the audience to get to know them well, and some of them have turned out to be quite relatable. Such is the case of Squidward, whose pessimistic attitude and constant sadness have resonated with many viewers.

As mentioned above, Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob’s neighbor (literally living right next to him and Patrick) and coworker, so out of all characters in the series, he’s the one who has to deal with SpongeBob the most. Squidward is the complete opposite from SpongeBob – while the latter is always cheerful and optimistic, Squidward is grumpy, bad-tempered, negative, and egotistical, though he has shown some empathy towards his neighbor a couple of times. Squidward has stood out for always being miserable and sad, and things rarely turn out the way he wants them to, and this has resonated with the audience while also being used in different jokes within the show, such as that one time he left flowers for his “hopes and dreams” at the cemetery, but the question remains: why is Squidward sad and miserable all the time?

The simple answer to why Squidward is sad all the time is because he has a negative view of life, most likely because of the fact that he works at a job he hates, is too narcissistic and is surrounded by characters who don’t appreciate the “good things in life” as he does, such as classical music, ballet, art, and more. However, some viewers have analyzed Squidward’s personality a bit deeper in order to find a more complete reason as to why he’s always so miserable. The most popular answer to why Squidward is sad all time seems to be because he’s very intelligent, and way more than all those characters around him, but his ego gets in the way. While he’s very talented in different artistic areas such as painting, he’s an ok clarinet player, which seems to be his passion, yet he’s not as good as he would like. Every time his talents and efforts are about to be recognized, someone comes in the way and ruins it for him, whether SpongeBob, Patrick, his eternal enemy Squilliam Fancyson, or his own ego.

This has led Squidward to be stuck at a job he doesn’t like, living in a neighborhood he doesn’t like either, and sharing time with people he can’t stand – however, when he gets the chance to share with people who are “at his level”, he gets bored and gets an urge to prove himself, and ends up ruining his opportunities. Squidward is destined to be the tragic character of SpongeBob SquarePants, and because he’s the opposite of the main character, there’s no chance he will change anytime soon.
