Spotify, Snapchat, and other various apps are all down right now — causing massive issues and headaches all across the internet. Modern technology is an amazing thing. It allows us to instantly chat with people anywhere in the world, stream millions of songs, and do countless other things. When all of this works as intended, it’s nothing short of magical.

Unfortunately, these things aren’t always perfect. Smartphones encounter hardware issues, apps/websites can go down, and there’s always some new security vulnerability to be on the lookout for. There’s no doubt these things can be annoying, but they’re an expected quantity in 2021.

This point was proven once more on November 16, 2021. A little before 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT, countless apps and websites started having service issues. According to Down Detector, this includes Spotify, Snapchat, Discord, Pokémon Go, Nest, Google, Fitbit, Etsy, and others. Some of these companies confirmed the outages themselves, with the Spotify Status Twitter account saying, “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out! We’ll keep you posted.”

What’s Causing This Latest Internet Outage

How do so many apps and websites go down all at once? In this case, an issue with Google Cloud is to blame. Google Cloud is a cloud computing platform that powers the likes of Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive, etc. It’s also used by third-party companies — such as Spotify and Snapchat — to power their own services. On the Google Cloud Status Dashboard, Google published two error reports at 10:10 AM PST and 10:17 PST, respectively. The first report confirmed Google was “experiencing an issue with Cloud Networking beginning at Tuesday, 2021-11-16 09:53 US/Pacific.” The second report confirmed Google had “partially resolved” some of the issues, but it does not have “an ETA for full resolution at this point.”

Unfortunately, that’s about all we know right now. Google’s clearly aware of the problem and trying to get it fixed, but it may be a while before everything is back to normal. Sit tight, be patient, and regularly check back with these apps as they’re slowly brought back to their usual state.
