Squid Game Junho Is Still Alive Theory Explained

In the Netflix survival drama Squid Game, police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) ends up getting shot and falling off a cliff and into the ocean – an encounter that he most likely survived. Squid Game has very quickly become the most watched show out of Netflix’s September releases. And one of Squid Game’s most compelling side stories is that of Hwang Jun-ho, a Seoul cop who infiltrates the game’s operations to gather evidence and find his long-lost brother In-ho.

After gathering clues on the operations behind Squid Game, Jun-ho sneaks into the island and assumes the identity of one of the workers in the games. Through Jun-ho’s eyes, viewers get an in-depth look into the day-to-day operations of Squid Game. This includes how workers live and work on the island, the black market organ stealing operation ran by some of the workers, and the Front Man’s files on Squid Game’s current and previous players, which is how he finds out that his brother In-ho was one of the game’s winners. Disguised as a server, Jun-ho also experiences firsthand how depraved the VIPs betting on the games can be. Jun-ho’s neo-noir story arc in Squid Game culminates in episode 8, when he is confronted by the Front Man, who is revealed to be the brother he’s looking for.

As Jun-ho is a threat to the secrecy of Squid Game, In-ho shoots his brother in the shoulder, and the police officer is shown falling into the ocean below. However, Jun-ho’s dead body is never shown. There’s also no scene wherein In-ho and his workers get down from the cliff where Jun-ho was shot to find his body and finish the job. As Jun-ho is both a resilient and resourceful police officer, it’s highly likely that he somehow escaped the island and is alive and recovering from his non-fatal wound. Even if he couldn’t get to the scuba gear in the island’s caves, he could’ve left on a boat while In-ho and his workers became busy tending to the games and the VIPs.

On the other hand, the Squid Game ending makes it clear that the games are up and running again. This suggests that not only is Jun-ho dead, but that the evidence he gathered never made it to the police. However, considering how rich and powerful the many nameless VIPs that bet on Squid Game were shown to be, it’s just as likely that Jun-ho is still alive, and that his hard-earned evidence was swept under the proverbial rug. Jun-ho could very well be in hiding, and already plotting his next move to bring down Squid Game.

If Netflix does decide to push through with season 2, it would be a mistake not to bring back Jun-ho, who is easily one of the most compelling characters in the cast of Squid Game. Moreover, as the last scene in Squid Game shows protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) determined to move against the games as well, Jun-ho could have a new rich ally on his side if his story continues in Squid Game season 2.
