Squid Game Season 2s Biggest Risk (& How To Avoid It)

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Squid Game.

Squid Game season 2 could be taking a huge risk if it ends up revealing the game’s origin story. After Squid Game season 1 was released in September 2021, it very quickly became the most popular show on Netflix. In less than a month after its release, Squid Game not only singlehandedly changed the future of K-dramas on Netflix, but also revitalized the death games genre.

Squid Game creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk now faces high audience expectations for season 2, which has been confirmed to be in the works. Considering how Squid Game season 1 dropped more than enough clues and foreshadowing elements to spur fan theories that surprised even Dong-hyuk, fans of the series will undoubtedly be on the lookout for the subtlest clues the moment season 2 airs. Compared to Squid Game season 1, in which audiences had practically no expectations from the then-unknown director, season 2 is expected to not just meet but surpass season 1’s twists, turns, and overall success. This has led many fans to theorize that Dong-hyuk will finally reveal the game’s origins in season 2, which is likely tied to Squid Game protagonist Seong Gi-hun’s final fate. That being said, revealing this aspect of the story comes with its own huge risks.

Squid Game season 2, if it does pull back the curtain on the game’s true origins, risks stripping the mystery that makes the Squid Game organization such an interesting addition to the death games genre. And based on what Dong-hyuk has said about his plans for season 2, the director could be gearing up to take this risk. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dong-hyuk explains that the alternate ending of Squid Game season 1 involves Gi-hun getting on the plane for his happy ending. However, as Dong-hyuk explains, this ending would’ve robbed the show of the opportunity to answer its biggest question:

“We came to the conclusion that the question that we wanted to propose cannot be done if he left on the plane…. The question that we want to answer — why has the world come to what it is now? — can only be answered or can only be proposed if Gi-hun turned back and walked towards the camera… Seeing how much the world is really fascinated and interested in Squid Game, it definitely makes me want to really try hard to continue to create something that’s going to pick at the issues of modern day and some of the social issues that we are going to see in the near future in a way that’s much like Squid Game, where it’s entertaining, intriguing, satirical, and refreshing at the same time.”

In short, Hwang Dong-hyuk seems determined to surpass the impactful sociopolitical commentary in Squid Game season 1, which could be possible if season 2 further explores what makes the Squid Game organization tick, instead of leaving it at the pieces of information provided sparingly in the first season. At the same time, revealing the game’s true origins would be a tall order in terms of crafting a truly satisfying story, as it would essentially remove all the mystery behind the Squid Game organization. That being said, it’s also possible that the beginnings of the Squid Game organization could pave the way for even better and more effective twists in season 2.

Squid Game season 2 doesn’t have an official release date yet. But Netflix could announce its targeted release date soon, which will likely be in the fourth quarter of 2022. And if Dong-hyuk does decide to pursue unraveling the Squid Game’s organization’s origins in season 2, it would undoubtedly be a huge risk that comes with the potential of an even bigger reward – just like being a player in Squid Game. If Dong-hyuk’s plans don’t end up in failure, Squid Game season 2 could forever change the landscape of both K-drama and the death games genre.
