Stan Lee Admitted Marvel Trolled DC In The Most Hilarious Way

Stan Lee wasn’t afraid to do some friendly trolling at his biggest competitors. Marvel Comics’ rivalry with DC Comics is the stuff of legends, as the two publishers have battled for decades when it comes to putting out some of the best superhero comics on the market. In the late 70s, the Marvel legend admitted to intentionally trolling DC after outselling them by changing a few covers of their own books.

Marvel Comics and DC Comics are considered the “big two” of the comic book world. Marvel still controls the largest percentage of comics sold, with a nearly 35 percent market share in comic shops during the first quarter of 2021, while DC ranks second with a 27.9 percent market share. The only non-Marvel or DC publisher to even hit double digits was Image Comics, which had 10.1 percent of the total market share. Generally, Marvel has usually bested DC in total comic sales. But when Marvel outsold DC Comics in the late ’70s, Stan Lee made sure to troll the publisher.

In an interview in the late ’70s, the former Marvel editor-in-chief was asked about his competition at DC Comics. Without hesitation, Lee said “bless their little innocent hearts,” before admitting that they had “fun with them” after they started selling more comics. According to Lee, DC studied Marvel’s covers in an effort to try to emulate their success. Lee said DC noticed the use of red on their comics and started doing their own red covers. He added DC did the same thing with dialogue on the covers. In response, Marvel took “all the red” and dialogue off their covers, which Lee revealed still led to their books still selling better. Lee said it drove DC “crazy.” (Lee’s answer begins around the 8-minute mark of the YouTube video below).

Lee wasn’t done roasting DC, as he said Marvel worked “a little more seriously and maybe we have a little bit more of a sense of humor.” He called DC Comics’ approach “stuffy,” and told the interviewer readers “like things that are whimsical or humorous.” He joked not to tell DC Comics what they did.

It’s unclear how many covers Marvel changed in response to DC Comics emulating them, as Lee put it. Still, the fact Lee trolled DC by removing both the color red and dialogue from covers, shows how much the rivalry between the two publishers meant to him. Funny enough, Lee would write for DC Comics more than two decades after making the comments. So, while the comments and trolling were real, Stan Lee surely respected DC Comics – at least enough to have some fun with them.
