Stan Lee Gets A New York Street Named After Him

Comic book overlord and Marvel legend, Stan Lee, is set to have a New York street named in his honor. Though Lee worked for a number of different companies during his career, it’s his time at Marvel that forms the bulk of the man’s legacy, having created or co-created iconic fictional characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Hulk and the X-Men, among countless others. Though Lee is generally considered the most important figure in Western comics, he also worked within the realm of Japanese animation and manga, and contributed to a number of live-action TV productions through his POW! Entertainment company.

Increasingly in his later years, Lee became famous for his cameos in the live-action Marvel movies, beginning with 2000’s X-Men. Interestingly, a cameo was filmed for Blade in 1998, but the scene was cut from the final edit. Among Lee’s most memorable Marvel cameos are his “Tony Stank” delivery man, Deadpool’s strip club DJ and The Amazing Spider-Man’s oblivious librarian. After a long and storied life, Stan Lee sadly passed away in November 2018, with his final MCU cameo arriving in Avengers: Endgame, in which he played a 1970s hippie driving outside Camp Lehigh alongside his wife.

In commemoration of Stan Lee’s life and achievements, a street in New York is set to be named in his honor. As reported by the New York Post, the City Council voted earlier this week to approve a proposal to co-name University Avenue in The Bronx “Stan Lee Way.” The final step is to have the mayor sign off on the proposal.

Stan Lee’s connection to New York, and indeed to University Avenue, runs deep. Born in nearby Manhattan, the comic writer went on to live on University Avenue at one point during his life and also attended high school in The Bronx. Lee continued to reside and work within New York until moving to the West Coast in the 1980s and famously used the city as the backdrop for some of his most famous characters, Spider-Man being the first that swings to mind.

Many Marvel fans would likely agree that it’s simply not possible to pay enough tributes to Stan Lee, and this street co-naming in the latest in a long line of dedications to the writer, artist and cameo master. While these tributes are intended to commemorate Lee’s literary contributions, it’s interesting that the mainstream consciousness only began to recognize his cultural impact in the past two decades, when Stan Lee creations began hitting the big screen at a rapid rate. Nevertheless, Stan Lee Way is a fitting way to remember one of New York’s most famous sons.
