Star Citizen Gets A New Studio To Help Build New Worlds

Turbulent, one of the partners behind the ambitious and chronically-delayed space simulation game Star Citizen, will open a new game studio with the primary focus of developing star systems for the game’s persistent universe. Since Star Citizen began production close to 10 years ago, the game has continued to simultaneously pique interest and inspire misguided hope for sci-fi MMO fans.

Those in the gaming community who have followed Star Citizen’s development are no doubt familiar with the various milestones and controversies that have popped up. There was the announcement of the game’s single-player component, Squadron 42, which still boasts an absolutely stellar cast that includes the likes of Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, and Gillian Anderson. There’s Star Citizen’s crowdfunding history, which to date has amassed over $300 million in donations from people determined to see its release. There was billionaire Clive Calder’s financial involvement in Cloud Imperium Games, and even a still ongoing lawsuit with Crytek that has yet to be fully resolved. All of this, and more, has made the full commercial release of Star Citizen seem perpetually over the horizon.

However, according to a press release, Turbulent has announced that it will be creating a Montreal-based studio focused on building out the countless star systems in Star Citizen. Benoit Beausejour will lead the studio, with the likes of Guillaume Voghel, Pierre-Luc Boulais, and Louis Rousseau, who have each developed solid game development credits in their own right. Beausejour stated in the press release:

“Montreal has an amazing talent pool of developers and a rich video game history, and we couldn’t be happier to add the very best local talent to work with the CIG family on the focused goal of building worlds for this unprecedented persistent universe.”

The press release also highlights additional information and goals regarding what this studio seeks to contribute, including some mentions of staffing and the relationship between Turbulent and Cloud Imperium Games. Over the next three years, Turbulent and CIG will look to grow the studio to around 100 developers, all with the shared goal of creating diverse and vibrant worlds for players to explore. With more specificity, the press release states, “The remit of the Turbulent Star Citizen team is to develop new tools to enhance and expand the existing pipeline, create new locations and features and also build entire new star systems for Star Citizen.”

Although this news definitely seems like a step in the right direction for Star Citizen, it’s no doubt a solid reminder that the title is still some years away. This can be extremely encouraging news for those who have already tried the alpha version of the game, as a studio meant solely for world development will of course have a significant impact on the final structure of the Star Citizen. However, it’s tough to stay excited and not jaded for something that’s seemingly been in development forever and without a solid date of release, even if it is full of promise and potential.
