One of the toughest roles to play in the Star Wars universe is a Sith Lord. Playing an Imperial bureaucrat requires actors to replicate Peter Cushing’s smarm from the original 1977 movie, while playing a Jedi Knight just requires them to be wholesome and heroic. But the actors who play Sith Lords need to have a uniquely chilling on-screen presence.
Such legendary actors as Christopher Lee, James Earl Jones, and Ian McDiarmid have taken on the roles of Sith Lords over the years. In Disney’s new era of Star Wars, they could be joined by such stars as Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, and Lena Headey.
10 Benedict Cumberbatch
Although he was underserved by a flimsy script, Benedict Cumberbatch made for a terrifying Star Trek villain in the role of Khan – masqueraded as “John Harrison” in the early scenes – in Star Trek Into Darkness.
Cumberbatch has become a popular fan casting for Grand Admiral Thrawn since The Mandalorian established that Ahsoka is looking for him, but he might be even better suited to the role of a Sith Lord than an Imperial leader.
9 Idris Elba
Like Cumberbatch, Idris Elba made for an unforgettable Star Trek villain in the Kelvin Timeline. The actor usually plays protagonists like DCI John Luther, Heimdall, Bloodsport, and Stacker Pentecost, but he’s played more than enough bad guys to prove he’d make a great Sith Lord.
He gave an even more memorable turn as Shere Khan in the live-action Jungle Book remake than the original voice actor. Earlier this year, he gave a delightfully sinister performance as the gunslinging villain in Netflix’s action-packed western gem The Harder They Fall.
8 Jason Isaacs
Technically, Jason Isaacs has already played a Sith character. He voiced the Grand Inquisitor in Rebels, but voice roles don’t utilize an actor’s full range of talents.
In villainous roles like Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies and Captain Hook in 2003’s Peter Pan, Isaacs made for a truly menacing on-screen presence. Star Wars should apply that on-screen presence to a live-action role (maybe even a live-action version of the Grand Inquisitor).
7 Eva Green
Throughout her career, Eva Green has played both femme fatales, like Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and Ava Lord in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and straightforward villains, like Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy, in 300: Rise of an Empire.
She also has the dramatic acting gifts to handle the nuance of a character like Asajj Ventress. Green would make an awesome Sith Lord, like Miss Peregrine with a lightsaber.
6 Denzel Washington
As one of the most celebrated dramatic actors in the world, Denzel Washington probably has bigger fish to fry than taking on the role of a Sith Lord in a Star Wars movie. But if he did, he’d undoubtedly do a fantastic job.
Washington won his second Academy Award for playing an ominous mentor figure with delusions of grandeur opposite Ethan Hawke in Training Day.
5 Ralph Fiennes
Ralph Fiennes has played all kinds of roles over the years – M in Daniel Craig’s later Bond movies, a Hungarian cartographer in The English Patient, a foul-mouthed hotel concierge who gets framed for murder in The Grand Budapest Hotel – but arguably his most iconic roles are villains.
Fiennes has played both hammed-up genre villains, like Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise, and horrifying real-life villains, like Amon Göth in Schindler’s List. He’d knock the role of a Sith Lord out of the park.
4 Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem won an Oscar for his unnerving performance as hitman Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers’ neo-western masterpiece No Country for Old Men. Chigurh is a relentless killing machine who will stop at nothing to eliminate his targets.
The cold-heartedness and ruthlessness that Bardem displayed as Chigurh – and in his Bond villain role as Raoul Silva in Skyfall – would be ideal for a bloodthirsty Sith character like an Inquisitor.
3 Mark Strong
Mark Strong is one of the go-to casting choices for blockbuster villains – Lord Henry Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes, Frank D’Amico in Kick-Ass, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam!, etc. – and for a very good reason.
While Strong can be perfectly affable in a likable role like Merlin in the Kingsman franchise, he can also switch to genuine menace at the drop of a dime.
2 Lena Headey
Sith Lords are villains who see themselves as heroes. They believe that the dark side of the Force is the right side and that the evil they spread across the galaxy is necessary for the greater good.
A perfect example of a villain that sees herself as a hero is Cersei Lannister, played brilliantly by Lena Headey in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Headey also played an all-out sadistic, unsettling baddie in Dredd as the drug lord in charge of the high-rise that Judge Dredd infiltrates.
1 Christoph Waltz
Christoph Waltz proved that he can play sweet, lovable, heroic characters with his turn as dentist-turned-bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz in Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western Django Unchained. But Waltz’s first Oscar-winning Tarantino role, Col. Hans Landa in the darkly comic World War II epic Inglourious Basterds, made him the go-to guy for eerily calm, overwhelmingly menacing villains.
Waltz has since played James Bond’s big bad, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, spectacularly. He’d do a terrific job with a haunting Sith role like Darth Sidious or Darth Plagueis.
