Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

Star Wars is a vast and brilliant franchise that has dominated the pop culture world for over 40 years. With iconic characters, fantastic films, and moments that will stand the test of time in cinema and culture. Another great aspect of Star Wars is its performers. Actors such as Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Ewan McGregor, and more, have all delivered exceptional performances throughout the saga.

Out with these physical performances, Star Wars is chock-full of voice performances that have delivered just as brilliantly. Through both the films and the animated shows, many a performer has shone through with the work they put in with their vocal talents. So, here are Star Wars’ 10 best voice performances – from the films and shows.

10 FREDDIE PRINZE JR. AS KANAN JARRUS IN STAR WARS REBELS (2014-2018)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

The performances throughout the four seasons of Star Wars: Rebels are all pretty fantastic. But getting the nod here is Jedi Kanan Jarrus played by Freddie Prinze Jr.

Prinze’s voice is perfect for the role of Kanan and from seasons 1 through 4 he is a constant presence of a consistently high standard and a unique performance the show would be lost without. A special shoutout goes to Taylor Gray, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Sircar, and Steven Blum in their roles of the other members of Ghost crew who give phenomenal performances. They are fairly interchangeable, however, Prinze’s voice gets the nod here.

9 LARS MIKKELSEN AS GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN IN STAR WARS REBELS (2016-2018)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

Another of the great performances the fantastic show brought people, this time comes from outside the core group of heroes. It is Lars Mikkelsen who expertly voices the beloved Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Mikkelsen gets the voice of the Chiss pretty spot on. The air of cool, calm, cold, and calculating nature of the Grand Admiral is captured by Mikkelsen brilliantly. His voice makes the character that bit better and one of Rebels’ finest additions to the Star Wars universe, who we will hopefully see again.

8 ALAN TUDYK AS K-2SO IN ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (2016)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a great film that was a huge success for the first standalone story, with its fantastic third act and flashes of brilliance throughout to thank. The star of the whole movie from a character perspective was undoubtedly K-2SO, in big part to the performance of Alan Tudyk.

K-2 is hilarious throughout the movie and Tudyk’s voice fits the droid perfectly. The timing and tone of Tudyk brilliantly matched the well-written script of the movie. Tudyk is set to reprise his role as the droid in the upcoming Cassian series so thankfully it will not be long before we get the pairing again.

7 DEE BRADLEY BAKER AS THE CLONES IN THE CLONE WARS/REBELS (2008-2014/2015-2018)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

Dee Bradley Baker had a hard task when it came to his role in The Clone Wars, he had to voice all the Clones. He does so brilliantly. The Clone Wars brought characterization and emotion to the Clones. The show made them matter. It made them individuals who were more than a CT allocation.

Bradley Baker fit into this brilliantly. Interacting with himself as well as the other amazing voice talent brilliantly and giving a true and excellent voice to the Clones. Baker reprises his role in Rebels as Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor, and again delivers just as good as he did in The Clone Wars.

6 ANTHONY DANIELS AS C-3PO IN THE SKYWALKER SAGA (1977-2019)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

This may seem a little low for a character as known as Threepio. But it is still a great position and Daniels performs the role brilliantly and ultimately the next 4 entries can all be argued for the higher position with Daniels falling lowest on this given day.

Daniels’ performance in The Rise Of Skywalker outshines any of his previous ones, being hilarious and dynamic with other characters throughout. While there is not much to Threepio in the prequels, 2 of the sequels, Daniels delivers in spades in the Skywalker saga’s final installment and 3 original entries, even when he is outshined.

5 SAM WITWER AS MAUL IN THE CLONE WARS/REBELS (2012-2013/2015-2017)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

Maul’s revealed survival in The Clone Wars was a shocking revelation that some did not like at first. But as the show progressed with Maul in it, it became clear how brilliant it was as he turned out to be an unbelievable character, one of the series’ best.

This is in no small part to the terrific voice work from Sam Witwer. Witwer has voiced a plethora of people in the Star Wars universe including Palpatine in Rebels season 2 and The Force Unleashed as well as Galen Marek in the same game. Maul is undoubtedly his best role though, bringing Maul’s anger, passion, and hatred to life beautifully in both of the animated series, as well as in Solo.

4 JAMES ARNOLD TAYLOR & MATT LANTER AS OBI-WAN & ANAKIN IN THE CLONE WARS (2008-2014)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

A bit of a cheat with this entry, but the 2 were so close in the show that it seems fitting they get put together on this list. Anakin & Obi-Wan are two of Star Wars’ best, most popular, and most iconic characters. The Clone Wars only served to add to this legacy in no small part to the fantastic performers who portrayed the duo.

James Arnold Taylor is a phenomenal and experienced voice actor whose outing as the brilliant Jedi lived up to the performances of Ewan McGregor perfectly, even reprising his role minorly in Rebels. As for Matt Lanter, the voice he gives to Anakin is fantastic, it is similar in sound but far more varied in tone to Christensen’s portrayal and Lanter delivers emotion and depth into the role, as well as humor and fantastic dynamics with both Taylor’s Obi-Wan and the other characters throughout. Not least of all…

3 ASHLEY ECKSTEIN AS AHSOKA TANO IN THE CLONE WARS/REBELS (2008-2014/2015-2018)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

The character of Ahsoka Tano had quite the journey, both in the universe and in the fandom. Rejected at first before being embraced and beloved by fans, Ahsoka is one of the best characters in all of Star Wars and has the perfect voice performer in Ashley Eckstein.

Eckstein brought the fire and inexperience early on in Ahsoka’s time. She then went on in the late stages of The Clone Wars and all through Rebels being the independent and powerful Jedi turned light-side-Force user who everyone came to love. Others may argue for any of the previous entries, and they would be valid, but Eckstein earns her place here.

2 JAMES EARL JONES AS DARTH VADER IN THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY (1977-1983)

Star Wars 10 Best Voice Performances

In his later years, evident in Rogue One and The Rise Of Skywalker, the legendary James Earl Jones’ voice just is not what it used to be. Nevertheless, though, that is not his fault and it does not tarnish the phenomenal legacy he created for himself in the Star Wars universe with his iconic voice portrayal in the original trilogy.

Menacing, fear-inducing, and ominous, all ways to describe Darth Vader and the voice James Earl Jones gives him. Vader is one of cinema and pop culture’s most iconic characters and James Earl Jones is a huge part of what makes him so. Vader will be remembered for generations, and remembered alongside the character will be the stupendous voice of James Earl Jones.

1 FRANK OZ AS YODA IN THE SKYWALKER SAGA (1980-2019)

Consistency, longevity, and brilliance are all factors that help make up Frank Oz’s 6 film appearances, 2 brief film cameos, and his Rebels appearance as the iconic green alien. Oz both puppeteered and voiced Yoda and is a relatively unsung hero in the Star Wars universe.

Yoda’s unique dialogue, brilliant voice, dual humorous then wisdom-filled tones, and iconic voice, in general, is all down to Oz. From The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 to The Phantom Menace In 1999 to The Last Jedi in 2017, Oz never misses a beat and is consistent in quality and sound.
