There’s a certain amount of freedom within the Jedi Order that allows those who follow it to be able to wear whatever they wish. The only time Darth Vader shows some bright colors (i.e. a hint of good and humanity) is when Luke removes his helmet to reveal a pale old man underneath the cold, mechanical exterior.

Traditionally, the Jedi robes were inspired by real life monks. However, within the galaxy far far away, those same robes actually resonate a similar feeling. Monks exist in some form in the Star Wars universe, and they inspired the Jedi Order’s famous gear.

The Jedi robes become more symbolic of that when a Jedi has gone into hiding or has secluded themselves. This became especially true by the time of A New Hope, where the Jedi were all but eradicated following Order 66. When the powerful Rey needed a mentor ,for instance, Luke Skywalker brandished a similar robed look after locking himself off from the Force for years.

The Jedi are an intelligent organization so while their robes might not look practical, they actually have a very significant purpose apart from being ceremonial or traditional. The robes act as protection from the many elements Jedi experience on the vast amount of planets they travel to.

The equipment was primarily designed to protect generals as they entered the field. While other armor in Star Wars has an offensive quality to them, these were made purely to keep the Jedi alive. The armor was used for the most necessary areas, worn across the chest, neck and arms.

Apparel can also showcase the kind of role that a Jedi might play. Whether it’s the armor of a general, the robes of a warrior, or perhaps the equipment of a healer, a lot can be said about the types of clothes a member of the organization will wear.
