For over forty years, Star Wars has provided fans with not only some unbelievable protagonists, but villains who are layered, complex, and fascinating characters. While there are many one-note villains throughout the canon, some villains are immensely popular for having such compelling story arcs.
On some occasions, no matter how evil they are, some villains even hit out with heroic actions. Whether this is in the form of redemption, a moment of respect, or heroics with ulterior motives, there have been a handful of them over the years.
10 Maul Attempting To Recruit Ahsoka
This is a bit of a difficult one. On the one hand, Maul orchestrated a planetary war to draw in and kill two Jedi; on the other, he was trying to stop Darth Vader’s existence and kill Darth Sidious.
Before their fight, which was initiated by Ahsoka’s love and belief in Anakin, Maul asks Ahsoka to join her to prevent the Empire and kill Sidious. Whether this was out of revenge or care is fairly irrelevant, he still tried to bring order to the Galaxy.
9 Asajj Ventress Aiding Ahsoka Tano
Sticking with villains working with Ahsoka Tano during her end of season 5 arc, which saw her on the run from the Republic, she finds an unlikely ally in Asajj Ventress.
Of course, Ventress was helping Ahsoka in a mutual deal that would see Ventress get a pardon from the Republic, but she still went above and beyond to help Ahsoka on the run, doing as much as she could to help out Anakin and send him towards Barriss Offee.
8 Alexsandr Kallus Defecting & Helping The Rebels
One of the main and the most prominent villain for a large chunk of Star Wars: Rebels, Agent Alexsandr Kallus is a great, perhaps underrated character in the underappreciated show.
After getting an insight into the rebellion via Garazeb Orellios and the care that is there, Kallus ended up becoming a sympathizer and defector. He joined the rebellion as an undercover agent Fulcrum, taking the mantle from Ahsoka Tano.
7 Boba Fett Helping Din Djarin
In another instance of a villain turning good, viewers have seen the return of Boba Fett in The Mandalorian, one of Star Wars’ most iconic characters.
In the show, he hunts Mando because he is searching for his armor. However, he ends up helping the bounty hunter get back Grogu in a deal of honor. Fett’s status of hero or villain from this point is unclear (and it looks to be a bit in between through his upcoming show) but this act of getting back everyone’s favorite Star Wars baby was undoubtedly heroic.
6 Maul Helping Ezra, Kanan, & Ahsoka (Briefly)
Going back to Maul and another instance of him just momentarily being on the overall good side of things, he resurfaced in Star Wars in Rebels’ masterpiece episode “Twilight of the Apprentice.”
Here, he joined Ahsoka, Ezra, and Kanan in fighting off the Inquisitors, fending off, and even killing the Inquisitorius. Of course, this was all temporary and a ploy to lure Ezra on his side, but still, he helped the heroes win a tough battle.
5 Asajj Ventress Helping Quinlan Vos & The Jedi
Although Ventress’s final arc in The Clone Wars went unproduced, her story was set to be epic. The “Dark Disciple” project ended up coming to fruition in a novel instead, and it was great.
Ventress did not become a Jedi, but she did form an alliance and romance with Quinlan Vos and agreed to help the Jedi in hunting and killing Dooku. Ventress wanted revenge more than anything else, but in this story proved herself to be good deep down, and it was incredibly heroic to not only team with Vos but she eventually saved him too.
4 Kylo Ren Killing Snoke
The divisiveness and controversy surrounding The Last Jedi will be talked about for years, but in the grand scheme of things, what was actually a relatively uncontroversial decision, in the end, was the killing of Snoke.
Kylo, not wanting to kill Rey, instead decides to turn the lightsaber on his Master, slicing Snoke in half. Of course, Kylo ended up just taking power for himself, but he did want an alliance with Rey and did kill a character who, at the time, wielded the most tyrannical, evil power in the Galaxy.
3 Cad Bane Saving Obi-Wan’s Life
A bad guy to the core and one of the best villains in The Clone Wars is ruthless bounty hunter Cad Bane, who had a great little rivalry with Obi-Wan throughout the series.
While ‘the box’ was set up by Dooku after Kenobi helped Bane and several other hunters in life-threatening situations, an attempt was made on Obi-Wan’s life. However, Bane ended up saving his life. While Bane did know it was Obi-Wan (since he was in disguise), he didn’t need to do this. It just proved he could be honorable and heroic.
2 Asajj Ventress Not Giving Up The Bounty To Be Held Captive & Married Off
Asajj Ventress proved once more that she wasn’t as villainous as all the other antagonists in the franchise when she saved a young woman.
After finding her new career as a bounty hunter and mercenary, she takes a job on Boba Fett’s crew to bring back a bounty for a client. The bounty turns out to be a young woman who is to be forcibly married to a slimeball. At the end of the episode, instead of marrying the poor girl off, Ventress lets her go free and ends up delivering a tied-up Boba Fett.
1 Darth Vader’s (& Kylo Ren’s) Redemption
The most significant act of heroism from a villain obviously falls to Darth Vader, perhaps the greatest character in Star Wars whose story culminates in Return Of The Jedi.
Vader saving his son, killing the Emperor, and redeeming himself to become Anakin Skywalker once again is the most important and most substantial heroic act from a villain in Star Wars. Kylo Ren did a similar thing, going to Exegol to help Rey, saves her life, and redeems himself to become Ben Solo once again.
