Star Wars 10 Reasons Why Rey & Luke Arent Real Friends

To say that the new Disney Star Wars trilogy is divisive is a colossal understatement. The fandom has gotten split in half seemingly multiple times over the past few years, and one of the biggest storylines to give birth to this split was that of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi.

Luke eventually comes round and performs one of the most heroic acts in all of Star Wars, but before that, Rey struggled to get Luke back. A lot went down between the two on Ahch-To and beyond, and on the surface, they have a good relationship in the end, but there’s a lot of evidence to suggest the two are not friends at all.

10 They Barely Knew Each Other

It is tough to judge exactly how long the events of each Star Wars movie are in-universe, but the fact is that The Last Jedi happens across, at most, a few days.

Therefore, Luke and Rey barely know each other at all and have gone through not a whole together, nor know each other other than information Luke does not disclose, and legends Rey has heard growing up.

9 Luke Wanted Nothing To Do With Rey

When they do meet in The Force Awakens, then properly in The Last Jedi, Luke wants absolutely nothing to do with Rey.

Luke went into isolation to die on that island and not coming back when Rey arrives and fortunately ruins those plans, Luke remains stubborn and unwilling to give her the time of day for a good while before Chewbacca gets involved and Rey eventually convinces him to train her.

8 Rey Stole Luke’s Books

Ok, so this is not that big of a deal, but the fact of the matter is the sacred Jedi texts may not be page-turners, but still are very important as we see in The Rise Of Skywalker.

So, Rey taking them and not giving any hints to Luke about it is not the best thing ever. Plus, Yoda was in on it, and he decided to mess with Luke and make him think they had gotten burned down with the tree. Had Rey asked and got rejected, the stealing would have at least been justified.

7 Rey Did Not Tell Luke About Han

This is another point that, in actuality, is not huge. Nevertheless, Luke deserved to know about Han sooner rather than later.

It was not until Chewbacca broke into Luke’s hut when Luke found out about Han. Perhaps instead of trying to convince Luke to come to help the Resistance and train her, she could have let him know about his best friend’s death.

6 Luke Refused To Come Back

Star Wars 10 Reasons Why Rey & Luke Arent Real Friends

For nearly all of The Last Jedi, Luke has precisely zero interest in coming out of isolation and joining the fight again. He gives into training Rey, but that is all until he finally sacrifices himself.

Rey goaded him for their entire time together to come back before realizing it was a waste of time. Luke not coming back until long after Rey leaves just seems to point to the two not being friends, Luke realized he had to do the right thing, but not all because of Rey.

5 Luke Lied To Rey

Star Wars 10 Reasons Why Rey & Luke Arent Real Friends

Rey gets lied to quite a bit in The Last Jedi, and the most prominent example of it is Luke and Kylo’s renditions of what happened when Ben Solo fell to the Dark Side of the Force.

Luke tells Rey a version of the story where Luke never ignited his saber, and Ben attacked him, and Kylo tells a version where Luke was crazed and tried to kill him. The correct version of events is that Luke ignited his lightsaber before realizing what he was doing. Luke lying to Rey at this moment out of shame is evidence the two are not friends.

4 Rey Left Ahch-To

Eventually, Rey left Ahch-To after believing more in Kylo and seeing that being on Ahch-To with Luke was a waste of time while her friends face potential death.

The fact Rey believed she would have more success going to Snoke’s ship to meet Kylo in terms of helping the Resistance rather than stay with Luke on Ahch-To is very telling.

3 Rey Attacked Luke

Of course, before that, Luke saw Rey communicating with Kylo, prompting him to tell Rey to get off the island, which, in turn, prompted Rey to attack Luke from behind.

The two then got into a scuffle of which Rey came out victorious, and the truth came out. But, the fact Rey had to resort to violence is proof the two were far from friends – at least at that point. Can you imagine Luke attacking Yoda?

2 Luke Did Not Tell Rey She Was A Palpatine

The Rise Of Skywalker rather divisively revealed that Rey was actually a Palpatine, his granddaughter, in fact. Even worse than that poor reveal, though, was the fact that apparently both Luke and Leia knew about it.

Luke comes to Rey on Ahch-To as a Force Spirit and admits this to Rey. It is a bit of a headscratcher and does not make much sense. Nevertheless, Rey spends two-thirds of the trilogy in a search for who she is, something Luke clearly knows, yet he does not tell her this crucial information.

1 Rey Idealized Luke, And Expected A Lot From Him

People have their issue with Luke in The Last Jedi, but the fact is Luke was broken. He had grown older and was filled with fear at the potential of a new Empire, of a new Emperor and Vader. The snap moment where he contemplated killing Ben ruined him, and he left it all.

When Rey got to Ahch-To, she – similar to a lot of Star Wars fans – expected Luke to be happy, to take his lightsaber jump on the Millenium Falcon and take down the whole First Order with his lightsaber. She grew up with legends of Luke and idealized him, putting too much expectation on him, allowing barely any time to understand his feelings.
