Star Wars 10 Times Dark Siders Redeemed Themselves

The battle between good and evil is a staple in the Star Wars franchise, with the entire balance of the Force resting upon the shoulders of those on the light side and the dark side, most commonly represented by Jedi and Sith, respectively. Of course, Star Wars being the vast and expansive galaxy and franchise that it is, things are not always quite as black-and-white as they seem.

There are a plethora of characters who walk the line of dark and light, even switching between the two at various points in their life, whether it be by seduction to the dark side or a pull to the light. In both Legends and canon, there are many famous examples of dark side Force users redeeming themselves from their evil ways, walking back to the light after a stint in the dark.

10 Yuthura Ban (Legends)

Starting with the Legends side of things, Yuthura Ban is not a name that will immediately spring to mind for fans when talking about redemption stories, but she has one, nonetheless, coming in perhaps the greatest Star Wars game of all time, Knights Of The Old Republic.

Like Anakin Skywalker, Yuthura grew up a slave and was found by the Jedi, abandoning the Order and her master to find a new way to combat the practice that trapped her as a child. The player’s character finds her on Korriban as she plans to overthrow her new Sith Master, Uthar Wynn. When the player defeats Wynn and then Ban in combat, they convince Ban that the light is the right path, leading her to go back to seek forgiveness and training from the Jedi Order.

9 Ajunta Pall (Legends)

Sticking with Legends, many fans have probably wondered about but never explored the first-ever Sith Lord. In its infancy, canon is yet to explain this story, but, in Legends, that title belongs to Ajunta Pall.

Pall’s redemption is a special case. He died a Sith, a dark sider. However, through alchemy, he kept his spirit attached to the physical world, and, over many, many years, he began to see the error in his ways. Eventually, once again, in Knights Of The Old Republic, the player convinces Pall to turn back to the light, which he does, finally becoming at peace and at one with the Force.

8 Kyle Katarn (Legends)

Kyle Katarn is one of the most beloved heroes of the Legends timeline, with a plethora of appearances building up his phenomenal character—which definitely has a tough time sticking to one side of the light side/dark side divide.

Katarn had always had an immense fear of falling to the dark side, leaving the Jedi Order to go back to being a mercenary just to avoid it. However, he eventually succumbed, only to be saved by Mara Jade, who gave up her blade, telling Katarn to strike her down, making Katarn realize what he has done as his lightsaber was mere inches from Jade’s neck.

7 Galen Marek (Legends)

Continuing the trend of video game characters, Galen Marek, more commonly referred to as Starkiller, is the protagonist of the fantastic Force Unleashed game, and he has a pretty fantastic story that, unfortunately, can never be canon.

Starkiller goes through a lot of moral battles as the game’s story progresses, eventually faced with the idea of himself as a twisted cybernetic being consumed by the dark side, just like Vader. That, combined with his vision of Vader on Kashyyyk and the realization that he followed Vader because that is all he knew, eventually helped Marek turn to the light side and complete his redemption.

6 Revan (Legends)

Perhaps the most famous and beloved Legends character is Darth Revan, later just Revan, who, like others on the list, jumps between the light and dark side and is the main focus of Knights Of The Old Republic

The game’s major twist is that—spoiler alert—the player was Revan all along. Revan is shown to be a powerful Sith Lord who abandoned the Jedi with Malak and amassed an army. However, he lost his memory, was taken to the Jedi Temple, and eventually became a Jedi again, depending on your decisions in-game. Revan eventually defeats Malak, brings Bastilla Shan back to the light, and solidifies himself as a Jedi.

5 Mara Jade-Skywalker (Legends)

Wife of Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade is a character many, many fans prayed would be a part of Disney’s new canon and a part of the sequel trilogy. Alas, that never came to be, but the Legends content still exists for fans of the character.

Mara Jade started off as the Emperor’s Hand, a personal assassin of Palpatine. After his next death, though, Jade moved onto a career in smuggling before eventually seeing the error of the Dark Side, with help from Thrawn’s actions in Legends, seeking out Kyle Katarn to train her in the ways of the Jedi, becoming a powerful Jedi and falling in love with Luke—with some complications, of course.

4 Quinlan Vos

Moving onto canon redemption stories, Quinlan Vos was a Jedi during the time of the Galactic Republic and the Clone War, holding a reputation as a bit of a maverick within the order, making his eventual fall to the dark side less surprising.

Captured by Dooku and tortured, Vos eventually gave into the psychological torment, becoming an agent of the dark side after being consumed with finding Darth Sidious, becoming Dooku’s new apprentice, working for the Separatists for months while undercover within the Jedi Order. What turned Vos back to the light side was the death of his love, Asajj Ventress, who sacrificed herself to save Vos’ life.

3 Asajj Ventress

Speaking of Asajj Ventress, she is one of the mainstays of The Clone Wars and is a brilliant character whose story deserves to be known by all fans. Starting off her young life training in the ways of the Jedi, the death of her Master Ky Narec forced her to the dark side.

She then became Dooku’s apprentice before he betrayed her, eventually seeking revenge and becoming a bounty hunter. Ventress never became a Jedi, but she was definitely not a Sith at her life’s end. While she channeled the dark side, her falling in love with Vos and eventual sacrifice to spare his life completed her redemption. Being redeemed does not need to mean the individual becomes a Jedi, just that they prove themselves to be good, which Asajj did perfectly.

2 Kylo Ren/Ben Solo

Star Wars 10 Times Dark Siders Redeemed Themselves

The most recent redemption story that unfolded in front of the Star Wars fandom’s eyes was that of sequel trilogy villain and son of Han Solo and Leia Organa Kylo Ren, the sequel trilogy’s most consistently excellent character.

While many have issues with his redemption arc, that is more to do with the trilogy as a whole. Always dealing with his inner conflict, what eventually brings Ben Solo back to light was the death of his mother and a conversation with the memory of his father, who forgave him. Kylo threw away his lightsaber, and Ben Solo returned, helping Rey defeat Palpatine and eventually sacrificing his life to save hers. For the short time we knew him, Ben Solo was incredible.

1 Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker

The most famous and probably the best redemption story in all of Star Wars is—and probably always will be—that of Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one, the main character of the Skywalker saga.

His rise, fall, and redemption are illustrated not only through six movies but two TV shows, countless books, and comics, and with all that combined, Vader/Anakin has the best story in Star Wars. Vader’s eventual turn back to Anakin Skywalker in Return Of The Jedi will forever be an iconic moment, adored by fans everywhere.
