Star Wars: 10 Ways Finn Got Better & Better
Finn was an awesome character added to Star Wars and in many ways, he only got better as the saga progressed…

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is the most divisive thing ever to hit the franchise and its fandom and has created not only a divide within it, but a pocket of toxicity and gatekeeping that does not reflect well on the franchise. While it has its issues, the sequel trilogy has provided Star Wars with some phenomenal characters for further content to explore, including ex-stormtrooper Finn.
While Finn’s arc, like many others, had ups and downs and got a bit messy, the character was consistently great, and will likely be the same in future content, getting better and better in so many ways.
10 Left The First Order (Meeting Poe)
Taken from parents he never knew at a young age, Finn always knew himself as merely a series of numbers and letters, an expendable, tiny cog in a vicious machine as FN-2187.
However, he made the conscious decision to leave the First Order, and by meeting Poe Dameron, he managed to do so. On top of that, FN-2187 got given a better name, by a friend who would become his best, and he became Finn.
9 Met Rey & BB-8
Poe is not the only character Finn meets during the opening set of scenes in The Force Awakens, with him running into both Rey and BB-8 after losing Poe.
Not only does meeting Rey and BB-8 kick off incredible friendships, and the arcs of Finn and Rey for the series, but it saves Finn’s life, and gets him away from the First Order.
8 Less Of A Reliance On Rey
Sticking on the relationship of Finn and Rey, the pair had quite the journey throughout the trilogy, seeming to have high romantic chemistry, but eventually just being friends.
Finn’s character often has the complaint that he was too reliant on Rey, and spent most of this time chasing after her. Part of The Last Jedi and a lot of The Rise Of Skywalker point to Finn having realized there is more to focus on than just Rey. For example, he sides with Poe in the argument that Rey does not go out and help enough, meaning Finn has spent a lot of time away from her.
7 Force Sensitivity
One of the most confusing aspects of The Rise Of Skywalker was Finn’s attempt to confide in Rey something important. Many fans believed this was an admission of love, but J.J. Abrams confirmed it later to be that he is Force-sensitive, something teased in the film.
It is a shame Finn’s Force-sensitivity was not discovered and revealed earlier, as it would have made for some fantastic viewing. However, the fact that he is Force-sensitive means that going forward, he may train with Rey and expand on this power in future content.
6 Finding Others Like Him
Another discovery coming out of The Rise Of Skywalker related to Finn was that he was not the only stormtrooper who defected from the First Order and that Jannah, along with others, resided on Kef Bir after leaving the organization.
The fact that more stormtroopers defected will likely come up in post-sequel trilogy content, especially if the end of the novelization of the film is an indicator, but it also makes Finn feel less alone knowing there are people out there who understand exactly what he feels, visibly making him feel better.
5 Found Family
There are a variety of themes that permeate throughout all of Star Wars, from the movies to the shows to the comics and novels, and perhaps the most important in regards to the sequel trilogy is that of found family.
Rey and Finn, two people who grew up not knowing their parents, who were alone, and Poe who lost his parents before the films, they all found each other, and along with the likes of BB-8, Threepio, Leia, the Resistance, created a family, not related by blood, but family nonetheless.
4 Selflessness
When Finn escapes from the First Order and finds his way to Takodana with Han, Chewie, Rey, and BB-8, his only thought is to survive, to go on the run.
All he genuinely cares about for the first one and a half movies of the trilogy is him and then Rey. He helps out Poe and the Resistance and does care about Poe, but his only thought is an escape. By the end of The Last Jedi, Finn realizes that running is not what must be done, is not the right thing to do, that the Galaxy needs his help with the Resistance.
3 Realizing What Is Truly Good & Truly Evil
DJ was one of the most disappointing and poor characters of the trilogy, harmed by the execution of the Finn/Rose storyline; however, he was pivotal in Finn’s arc.
DJ was a huge part of Finn’s realization of the true divide between good and evil. Finn choosing the side of good allows him to ingrain himself into the Resistance fully, to make a difference in the Galaxy truly.
2 Resistance General
Finn and Poe is probably the best friendship of the trilogy except for Poe and BB-8, and they are both a big help throughout each other’s arcs, despite both having severe ups and downs.
At the end of The Rise Of Skywalker, Poe’s arc naturally came to the point where he finally knows what it means to be a leader and makes Finn a Resistance General alongside him, knowing he needs help.
1 Finding His Place
All of the ways in which Finn gets better as a character or as a person throughout the trilogy are indicative of perhaps the most significant way in which he improves; he finds his place.
Similar to how Poe finds his place as a leader, and Rey finds her place in the Galaxy, so too does Finn. He is no longer a series of numbers and letters, he is no longer running, he is no longer scared, he is a Resistance General, a friend, and someone who will continue to make the Galaxy a better place.
