When the Star Wars sequel trilogy got its announcement, fans were at a fever pitch, and one of the most exciting aspects going into it was the brand new characters fans were so fascinated by. Despite the trilogy being incredibly controversial in the fandom this many years later, it did add some fantastic characters to the canon.
One of which is Poe Dameron, whose arc throughout the trilogy has serious ups and downs, and, like the movies themselves, tends to be pretty disjointed. Nevertheless, he was great, and throughout the canon, in so many ways, Poe got better and better.
10 Zorii Bliss
Zorii Bliss was perhaps the best one-shot character of the trilogy, only appearing in the final film of the three, and stamping her authority as a badass.
While the entire story with her escaping Kijimi was left for the books to clean up and made Poe’s canon timeline a bit iffy, Zorri added a fun layer to Poe and likely will make for some interesting if not great content in the future.
9 Left Spice Running
Speaking of the murky canon timeline, The Rise Of Skywalker revealed that before his time as a crucial part of the Resistance, Poe was a spice runner, J. J. making clear Poe’s status as the Han of the trilogy.
In his early days, Poe left the spice running life and went on to do good, be a part of something bigger. Spice runners are not necessarily bad people, but Poe leaving that life certainly made him better and improved his life.
8 Rising In The Ranks
Poe then went on to join the New Republic Defense Fleet and then Resistance at some point, after learning his pilot skills from his late rebellion hero mother, Shara Bey and quickly made an impact.
Poe was a pilot who became a Commander in the New Republic Defense Fleet, and a squad leader and trusted advisor as a part of the Resistance, eventually rising to the rank of General.
7 Meeting Finn
The entire sequence of The Force Awakens with Finn and Poe separately having their issues with the First Order and then, together, escaping their clutches, is one of the best in the trilogy.
Finn not only saved Poe’s life and saved him from further torture, but also the life of the Resistance, with Kylo likely to extract information from Poe had it not been for Finn. On top of that, the two became close friends and an electric pairing.
6 Found Family
Family is a crucial aspect of Star Wars, one of the most significant and prominent themes in the franchise, perhaps most so in this trilogy, with found family being such an apparent thread in each film.
By the time of the movies, Finn, Rey, and Poe are all without parents, and together alongside BB-8, and then Chewbacca, Threepio, and other Resistance heroes, create a family, improving all their lives.
5 Extended Universe
The extended canon of books, comics, videogames, and audio content has been consistently great in this first few years of Star Wars’ new era, and Poe Dameron is a character who has benefited significantly because of it.
Through his solid comic line and novels that either has him as a central component or Free Fall, which is about him, Poe is improved so much as a character.
4 BB-8
Poe Dameron and BB-8 are one of the closest droid related friendships in the series, perhaps even the closest, and BB-8 coming into Poe’s possession made his life easier and saved his skin a few times too.
BB-8 came into Poe’s life during Poe’s early years in the New Republic Defense Fleet, and the two went on many a mission together before the events of the trilogy, with Before The Awakening novel detailing their meeting.
3 Learning Under Leia
When Poe joined the New Republic, he immediately caught the eye of Leia Organa, who saw a lot of her brother in Poe, and as such, took him under her wing.
Leia is one of the most intelligent and inspirational characters in the history of Star Wars, and her helping Poe, having him as one of her closest advisors, and teaching him so much made Poe a better hero, and a better person.
2 A Resistance Hero
That is what Poe would become, a hero, a hero of the Resistance who helped the Galaxy perhaps more than they could ever know in terms of what he and the Resistance did for them.
Poe led, and was a part of an incredible amount of Resistance missions, including but certainly not limited to the Battle of Starkiller Base, and the Battle of Exegol, both of which Poe was pivotal in, especially the former.
1 Learned To Be A Leader
The central arc for Poe in the trilogy, while murky at times, was his journey of learning that being a leader, and making a difference does not rely on, and is more important than being a hero.
Poe takes a good while to learn what it truly means to be a leader, and, while many have an issue with his story, when he is thrust into the position of General and asks Finn to be up there alongside him, it is a fantastic moment and a great resolution to the arc.
