While we all love the stormtroopers of Star Wars fame enough to dress up as them for Halloween, we have to admit their armor is pretty weird.

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

Depending on who you talk to, the Stormtroopers of the Star Wars universe fall into two categories: they are either an indomitable army that served as the main barrier between the sides of good and evil, or they are lousy shots who only pose a threat due to their vast numbers which, to be fair, were due to cloning at times. Their armor is just as varied.

While some armor adaptations are incredible forces to be reckoned with, others make zero sense at all. Some pieces aren’t even used, while others seem to be ill-suited for the duties they’re manufactured for, making the armor even weirder.

10 It Doesn’t Work All That Well

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

As technologically advanced as the armor in the Star Wars universe should be, we’ve seen it fail over and over again. It doesn’t matter if your sleek, shiny helmet looks fabulous if it doesn’t do its intended purpose in the first place, which is simply to protect your head in battle. The rest of the armor seems to let in much more damage than should be possible, as well.

We’ve even seen stormtroopers taken out by everything from Ewoks to a rock to the head, something you’d think those enormous helmets would prevent! It’s weird that the helmets would allow any significant damage at all. Just look at everything Darth Vader’s helmet went through to still exist today. Be like Vader’s helmet, stormtrooper helmets.

9 They Contain Recording Devices

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

Like a plane going down, every stormtrooper has a recording device in his or her armor, ensuring that every word that is uttered is not only recorded (possibly for training purposes, you never know), but also reviewed to ensure full compliance. This makes sense to assess damages after one’s been taken out, but it sure seems like a waste of time to just review all those tapes.

Perhaps we’ll even get to see body cams on stormtroopers before the series is finished, which would make much more sense than audio alone. That would even help assess each stormtrooper’s combat moves, which can famously use all the help they can get.

8 Some Are Designed For Non-Humans

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

It makes sense that the Galactic Empire would have a bunch of aliens working on their team. Not only are several of their positions in power filled by aliens, but so are several on the side of the Rebellion. If Admiral Ackbar doesn’t qualify as a non-human fighter, I don’t know who does. Besides, who would the Empire be to turn away anyone willing to perish for their cause?

That’s why there were originally stormtrooper designs made exclusively for alien bodies during the original Star Wars trilogy. It sounds weird, but it does make complete sense in a space opera full of, well, aliens, when you think about it.

7 They Don’t Allow For Much Range Of Motion

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

No matter what team you’re playing on, you want your warriors to have a wide range of motion so they can fight for you. Light yet sturdy armor has been the name of the game since battles began, and it would seem as if feudal Europe perfected the process much better than the Galactic Empire or the First Order.

Stormtrooper armor is clunky, awkward and hard to move around in. If it truly gave its wearer solid protection, that might be worth it, but it really doesn’t, which means that stormtroopers march around looking like Baymax with a grill for nothing.

6 There’s No Peripheral Vision

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

Can you imagine the military being fitted with helmets that don’t allow them to see to the side during a battle? This would be a terrible choice to make when arming your troops, yet it’s what the Evil Empire has done time and time again. It’s one of the reasons why while stormtroopers look cool, they also look kind of far-fetched.

Not having peripheral vision in your helmet is a huge disadvantage on the field, rendering you vulnerable from an attack from every side save for the one directly in front of you. It almost makes your helmet useless… especially if you can still be taken out by rocks.

5 They Dissipate Fire

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

One weird but super cool thing that stormtrooper uniforms can do is make a blast dissipate. This means that when a stormtrooper is hit with a blaster, his or her uniform will automatically spread the effect of the fire out over the uniform, not only taking the force of the hit but also thinning it out to help the stormtrooper recover more quickly.

This is why some fans argue that we only see stormtroopers knocked down, but many of them likely get right back up again once their armor does its high-tech job. The Star Wars Rebels cartoon has since partially confirmed this theory.

4 They Have Utility Belts

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

We don’t get to see them in action all that much, but stormtroopers definitely have utility belts filled with all kinds of goodies to use in battle. It would be so cool to see what’s kept hidden in those secret belts, which are supposed to be standard issue for all stormtroopers. It makes you wonder if any of them modify their belts superhero-style.

We did get to see Luke Skywalker put one of these belts into action when he found a grappling hook in it, but all that does is make us even more curious. What else is in those belts? We need to know. And it’s weird to have them if you don’t use them.

3 Their Helmets Have Head’s Up Displays (HUDs)

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

It’s a running joke in Star Wars that the stormtroopers have terrible aim since they often seem to not hit enormous targets and generally lose at everything, especially when rebels are outnumbered. That’s probably why we’ve witnessed so many heart-stopping moments when members of the Resistance found themselves grossly outnumbered lately.

What adds insult to injury here is the fact that stormtroopers used to have HUDs, better known as Head’s Up Displays, in their own helmets. That means they had all of that information, including help with accurate shooting, right at their disposal and still managed to fail so abysmally.

2 They Have Detonators That Are Never Used

Star Wars 10 Weird Facts About Stormtrooper Armor

Have you ever noticed the little cylinders found at the base of each stormtrooper’s back? These are button and code-protected thermal detonators that only the stormtrooper wearing them can activate, which is pretty genius. The only problem is that we’ve never seen them in use.

Not only are these cool weapons, but they vary in range, making them even more effective than bombs. They were put in to cover up the fact that the original stormtroopers didn’t end up using lightsabers as originally intended, so while it sort of makes sense that they’re not used, now that we know about them we kind of want to see them in action.

1 They’ve Worsened With Time

It’s a shame that in the name of speed and sleekness, stormtroopers have sacrificed the usability of their own uniforms over the years. The First Orders’ helmets just aren’t what they used to be without their HUD systems. The stormtroopers back in the day of the Galactic Empire that Kylo Ren worships so much also had artificial air enhancements, which makes a lot more sense to use to keep your troopers alive to fight.

Someone is bound to blame the Millennials for the sacrifice of better tech for the upgrade of more comfort and style, but you know what? You love your tech and so do Millennials, so we should blame this one where blame is due: the First Order.
