Before the legendary Mass Effect Saga started the world-renowned RPG company Bioware had another sci-fi epic to tackle in the form of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game went on to have two sequels, one of which was in the form of an MMO, and both of which carried on the proud tradition of the first game in giving the player access to a wide array of companions that would accompany them through the trials presented in each game.

Not every companion was instantly beloved, however, and through the course of the trilogy of games, there have been some greats and some less than greats added to the pantheon of Star Wars smugglers, soldiers, pilots, droids, and lightsaber-wielding wizards.

10 Already Forgot: Skadge Is An Unwanted Pest

Everyone loves a lovable scoundrel and cutthroat in Star Wars. But Skadge isn’t lovable. He forces himself onto the crew of the Bounty Hunter in SWTOR and never leaves, regardless of what the player may want.

He is not charming or endearing in his borderline evil antics and he adds very little to the story of the Bounty Hunter as a whole. Ultimately it is very hard to imagine someone less interesting to bring on your various adventures in the Star Wars universe than Skadge.

9 Can’t Forget: Elara Dorne Is An Interesting Take On Imperial Society

Among the playable storylines in the MMO entry to the Old Republic series, most people don’t immediately jump into the shoes of the Republic Trooper. Those that do make the jump however are greeted early by arguably the best turncoat in Star Wars history. What the sequel trilogy failed to do with Finn, SWTOR did with Elara Dorne.

A former imperial soldier, Elara has all the stiffness and memorized regulations one would expect from an uptight imperial. Depending on the actions of the player, particularly surrounding Elara’s republic parole officer, they may see another side to this former imperial, and even gain some insight into the empire as a whole through her eyes.

8 Already Forgot: Ashara Zavros Doesn’t Fit In Her Own Story

There are very few situations where a companion so clearly and hopelessly doesn’t fit the story they are in. This is perfectly demonstrated through Ashara. Ashara is a headstrong padawan that is practically incorruptible and would make a great addition to a Jedi-based story.

Sadly she is the companion of the Sith Inquisitor, a story about using the dark secrets of the ancient sith to seize political power. Granted light side players of this story will find Ashara to fit in nicely, but anyone who plays into the dark side spirit of the class will find it strange that this padawan is neither corrupted nor killed.

7 Can’t Forget: Vette Has A Truly Versatile Story

Vette offers one of the most uniquely versatile relationships available in SWTOR. Introduced early in the Sith Warrior storyline, Vette is enslaved and wears a shock collar you can activate in almost any conversation with her. The player can bully her and essentially torture her like an evil sith, keep the collar on only as a warning, take the collar off and treat her like an equal, or even free her and romance her.

The different ways that Vette’s story can go is so varied that it makes her a memorable addition to every playthrough of the Warrior storyline.

6 Already Forgot: T3-M4 Is Just Another Droid

Standing in as the R2D2 of the first two KOTOR games, this little droid has very rarely if ever been discussed. That is because he is just another R2D2. The slight glimpses of sass that can be found in the subtitles of his beeps and boops hardly make up for the fact that he had no distinguishing features of his own.

The truth of the matter is that most players remember the general design of this character far more readily than his name.

5 Can’t Forget: HK-47 Is Not Just Another Droid

On the positive side of new droids added to the Star Wars canon, HK-47 provides a truly different take on the common trope. HK may look superficially like he will stand in as the bumbling C-3PO clone, but players quickly discover that isn’t the case.

HK is an assassination droid that likes to talk smack while killing things, calls the player ‘meatbag,’ and has a dark history that can be uncovered over the course of the first KOTOR by periodic repairs to his memory core.

4 Already Forgot: Mical Is Exceptionally Bland

Star Wars 5 Old Republic Companions Gamers Cant Forget (& 5 They Already Have)

Not much can be said about Mical, the Disciple. He is a scholar and academic of the Jedi order and seeks to reform them after their near-eradication at the hands of the titular sith lords in the second KOTOR game.

Despite his noble goals, the man is very bland and uninteresting. While gamers have been talking about the complex characters and philosophy of KOTOR 2 in the years since its release, very few conversations have ever been had about Mical.

3 Can’t Forget: Jolee Bindo Questions The Jedi In Important Ways

Star Wars 5 Old Republic Companions Gamers Cant Forget (& 5 They Already Have)

Jolee Bindo shakes up the conventional wisdom in the Star Wars universe. Found living like a hermit in the shadowlands on the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk, Jolee is a powerful and wise Jedi master who has no interest whatsoever in the dogmatic Jedi code.

He has been married, loved, and ignored the will of the council on many occasions without ever falling to the dark side. Jolee served as one of the early examples of a force-using character that was not so easily defined as Jedi or Sith in the Star Wars universe.

2 Already Forgot: Juhani Was A Missed Opportunity

Star Wars 5 Old Republic Companions Gamers Cant Forget (& 5 They Already Have)

It is perhaps unfair to call Juhani a forgettable character, but certain aspects of her introduction in the first KOTOR relegate her to this fate. Introduced as a fallen Jedi many players will simply kill Juhani upon their first meeting with her. Those that do manage to redeem her might expect a long character arc of turning her fully back to the light, but sadly that happens almost instantly and she simply aids the player as a stalwart and loyal ally for the remainder of the game.

It is a missed opportunity to not have a more ongoing back and forth with Juhani about the nature of the dark side.

1 Can’t Forget: Kreia Stays With You Long After The Game Is Done

No character in comic, movie, book, or video game has ever had more to say about the Star Wars mythos than Kreia. Kreia is a rare and perhaps a truly unique type of character, a philosopher who engages directly with the cosmological status of the universe she inhabits.

For a character to focus on the nature of the force, of power, and the dichotomy and incompleteness of the light and dark, and on the strange fact that the force seems to have a will all from within the Star Wars universe itself is one of gaming’s proudest moments.
