Few characters are as iconic as Star Wars’ Han Solo and Leia Organa, but when it comes down to it, which is the better character?

Star Wars 5 Reasons Leia Was A Better Character (& 5 Reasons It Was Han)

If we look beyond Luke and Anakin Skywalker, there are a variety of characters across the Star Wars saga who are incredibly important to the story. Two of the most prominent were of course Han and Leia. They started off as a pair of mismatched, equally sassy strangers but quickly developed into a couple that… um… broke up and created Kylo Ren.

While the two were prominent throughout the original trilogy and returned for the sequels to great response, there has always been debate over which of the two was the better character. We’ve given five reasons in favor of Leia, and five in favor of Han below.

10 LEIA WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: She Was Strong With The Force

In the original Star Wars trilogy, we found out eventually that Luke and Leia were siblings. While Luke had been trained to use the force throughout the trilogy, we had only seen a couple of small suggestions that Leia could harness the ability too. We never saw her do anything incredible.

Luckily, the sequel trilogy was on hand to prove that Leia was both trained as a Jedi and could wield a lightsaber and perform some incredibly impressive force abilities that Han couldn’t dream of.

9 HAN WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: He Was An Impressive Pilot

While Han might not have had the natural ability to use the force, he did seem to have an impressive gift for piloting. This is one of the few things we never saw Leia do, but we saw Han do it a lot. Remember: he made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. Solo perfectly retconned this detail to make it about distance, rather than time.

8 LEIA WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: She Was Sassy

Of course, both Han and Leia were sassy in their own was, but Leia comes out on top simply because she was probably the one person in the universe who could get Han Solo to shut his mouth.

Remember when she called him a “stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder”? Yeah.

7 HAN WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: He Was Funny

Han might be outdone on sass by his wife, but nobody could deny his proclivity for cool one-liners. There are too many to count but some of his highlights include: “You know, sometimes I amaze even myself” and “it’s not wise to upset a Wookie”. Of course, Harrison Ford’s improvised “I know” in response to Leia’s declaration of love probably sits at the top of the list.

6 LEIA WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: She Lived The Longest Of The Original Trio

Each of the sequel films saw the demise of one of the original trio. Han Solo was killed by his son in episode VII, Luke gave his life to save his friends in the middle episode, and Leia (using archive footage that was edited rather questionably) managed to survive until episode IX, where she was able to use her force powers to help redeem her son.

5 HAN WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: His Final Appearance Was Completely Unexpected

Even though Han was dead by the time of Episode IX, he made a short cameo appearance just as Leia joined him in death. Obviously, he couldn’t return as a Force Ghost and Harrison Ford had distanced himself from the franchise since The Force Awakens, so we didn’t expect it at all.

Just hearing Harrison Ford’s voice was one of the most unexpectedly brilliant moments in that divisive final episode.

4 LEIA WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: She Was Focused On Justice And Humanity

Pretty much every character in Star Wars has a moment of wobbly morality. Han is a known criminal, and even Luke spent quite a while torn between the light and the dark. Leia was a permanent force for good, looking for the situation that saved the most lives.

3 HAN WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: He Was Rebellious

Despite Leia being more likable thanks to her overwhelmingly positive and justice-led approach to warfare, there is something about Han’s rebellious nature that you just can’t help but love.

He was clearly focused on remaining ‘good’, but he didn’t operate within the bounds of the law very often.

2 LEIA WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: She Lives On As A Force Ghost

One of George Lucas’ best ideas was giving his characters life after death. It’s basically a way to provide fan service that is legit in storyline terms but also gives us a way to hold onto characters who are no longer around. This means that, if the franchise ever does continue beyond Episode IX, there is a chance that we could hear from Leia again.

1 HAN WAS A BETTER CHARACTER: He Has His Own Film

Han was always one of the most popular characters in Star Wars. The original trilogy came out in a time that Harrison Ford couldn’t move for iconic cinematic roles, and his popularity never really dipped. It might not have been the best financial decision Disney ever made, but the fact that Star Wars fans got a whole film following Han was a nice move. Where is our Leia the Jedi film??
